With most international buyers unable to attend the 2021 sale, do you think this will present additional opportunities for domestic buyers?
It has to so I just hope they take advantage of it.

Have you had more enquiries this year with overseas agents / buyers, or equally domestic buyers, unable to travel to New Zealand for the sale?
Yes from overseas definitely but whether that transpires into final purchases is yet to be determined. There are plenty of nice horses and it would be great if we were able to secure them. There is nothing worse than watching a nice horse going through the ring that you really like and not having a client to place it with.

Vendors are now having to provide more information on each lot which has led to an increase in information and transparency around bloodstock sales. Do you think there will be any other positives come out of the global Covid pandemic and how do you feel this will change the industry over the coming years?
I think over the last year people have started to think balance in their lives is really important. Hopefully this will include the desire to be involved with racing a horse which can be incredibly exciting and rewarding regardless of the level they participate at.

Do you think on-farm inspections are becoming an increasingly important part of the inspection process and how do they help you?
This year definitely. With the additional enquiries it has been essential to get first looks done earlier than past years. Personally I have always liked to see them onsite leading up to the sales however, time and numbers have meant I have needed to have notes ready earlier so myself and buyers are prepared.

Which horse is your favourite Karaka / NZB yearling purchase and why?
Probably Lucia Valentina which I purchased out of the Blandford Lodge draft. She was a $60,000 yearling and went on to win over NZ$4 million. She provided us with some incredible racing moments that you normally only dream of.

What is your favourite NZB moment
When the hammer falls and it’s your bid on a horse you love.
