Hong Kong-based buyers made their presence felt during the opening session of Karaka 2021 - Book 1 spending NZ$2,500,000 on 15 lots with the most expensive of these being a colt from the second New Zealand-bred crop of Haunui Farm shuttler Belardo (Lope De Vega) who was bought by Mr D Kwan for NZ$380,000.

Sold by Seaton Park as Lot 148, the colt is the second living foal out of Wakefield Challenge Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) winner Steel Rose (Guillotine) whose first foal, American Princess (Jimmy Choux), is already a winner.

Paul Chow’s Tartan Meadows Bloodstock had, shortly earlier, gone to NZ$360,000 to secure Hallmark Stud’s Tivaci (High Chaparral) - Sprellina (Pins) colt. Sold as Lot 134, the colt is the second foal out of the unraced Pins (Snippets) mare Sorellina who is a sister to dual Group 1 winner Katie Lee (Pins).

The colt was one of three lots bought by Tartan Meadows Bloodstock on Sunday with a colt by Deep Field (Northern Meteor) secured for NZ$230,000 and a son of War Decree (War Front) who was bought for NZ$70,000.

The Deep Field was sold by Kilgravin Lodge as Lot 76 and is out of unplaced Holy Roman Emperor (Danehill) mare Roman Sandals who is a half-sister to Singapore stakes placegetter Desert Fox (Not A Single Doubt). The result represented a successful pinhook with the colt having been bought for $70,000 by McKeever / Kilgravin / Smith at last year's Inglis Sydney Weanling Sale.

Tartan Meadow Bloodstock finished the session as the fifth leading buyer by aggregate.

The Hong Kong Jockey Club also got their name on the buyers list on the opening day when purchasing a colt by Westbury Stud shuttler Reliable Man (Dalakhani) for NZ$340,000.

Signed for by Bruce and Maureen Harvey of Ascot Farm on behalf of the Hong Kong Jockey Club, the colt was offered by Westbury Stud as Lot 200, and is out of unraced Fastnet Rock (Danehill) mare Veva Girl who has already produced four winners including the colt’s Group 3 winning sister De La Terre and his Group 1 placed sister Alaalune, who ran second in last season’s Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m).
