Pencarrow Stud have now sold the two top priced fillies having sold the Zoustar - Scintillula (Galileo) filly for NZ$800,000 on Sunday, Greg Tomlinson’s Nearco Stud secured the Savabeel (Zabeel) - Asama Blue (Fastnet Rock) filly for NZ$450,000 on Monday.

Catalogued as Lot 254, the filly is the second foal out of Irish-bred Fastnet Rock (Danehill) mare Asama Blue who began her career in Europe before continuing her racing in New Zealand where she finished second in the 2018 Anniversary Stakes (Gr 3). The filly’s second dam is Butterfly Blue (Sadler’s Wells) who also produced Group 3 placed Sapphire Pendant (Danehill Dancer) who is the dam of Group 3 winning two-year-old Ecrivain (Lope De Vega). Her third dam meanwhile is Kentucky Oaks (Gr 1, 9f) winner Blush With Pride (Blushing Groom).

“I was really attracted to the pedigree and type. It’s a strong American family and an international family and I am familiar with the dam Asama Blue,” Tomlinson said.

“She was one of a number of horses that I looked at over the past few days and is certainly one of my top picks.”

Tomlinson was keen to add another filly to the racing team that will eventually join his broodmare band.

“I am not really hung up on numbers, but I am hung up on quality. It is a case of refreshing and getting stock that is going to suit our New Zealand breeding industry. That’s the focus.

“I am very pleased to support the local industry and the quality horses and that is the confidence I get out of buying from the Pencarrow draft under Leon Cassey’s management and (Sir) Peter Vela’s guidance.”

The filly is the only horse bought by Nearco Stud this week however Tomlinson has also been a seller this week with yearlings offered through Curraghmore and Rich Hill Stud.

“From what I could see, good quality yearlings were well sought after. That was pretty evident to me,” he said.

“Everything I have got entered that has been through so far has sold. I don’t focus in on one price. When I bring horses to the sales they are on the market. I reluctantly bring them home, but I look at it as an averages game rather than individual sales price.”

Waikato Stud’s Savabeel has had 20 lots sell over the first two days of the sale for a total of NZ$3,800,000 at an average of NZ$190,000.
