Webster happy with day trade

Classic day one finishes with strong increases

At the close of trade on day one of the Inglis Classic Yearling Sale, the auction house reported increases across the board, with 202 yearling selling at a clearance rate of 86 per cent, up from 78 per cent at the same point in 2020.

Meanwhile, the aggregate was up 20 per cent on last year’s edition at $21,418,000 when 213 lots sold on the first day for $18,558,500. The average of $106,030 is up 22 per cent on last year’s Book 1 sale average of $86,980 while the median is up 20 per cent to $90,000 from $75,000 that was recorded at last year’s sale.

Inglis managing director Mark Webster said he was particularly proud of the sales clearance rate and said he expected that to rise to somewhere near the 90 per cent mark overnight.

“It’s a very good start for everyone here, the vendors have presented a great product but have also been realistic in meeting the market while the buyers have shown the confidence to get involved that we were hopeful of,’’ Webster said.

“The most pleasing aspect for me is the clearance. To start at 86 per cent through the ring on Day 1 suggests we will be looking at 90 per cent by the morning and that is such a fantastic reward for the vendors and breeders who have put so much time and effort in.

“There are still a lot of yearlings to get through and a lot of buyers who are still looking to buy so hopefully the trend can continue for another couple of days.’’

The leading vendors by aggregate at the end of day were Arrowfield Stud, who sold 18 yearlings for an gross of $2,280,000, while leading the way by average (with three or more lots sold) was Bell River Thoroughbreds after they sold three yearlings for $705,000, recording an average of $235,000.

Leading the pack in terms of buyers after the opening session of the Sydney sale was Kavanagh Racing, who purchased eight yearlings for $860,000. The most expensive of these purchases was a filly by Dundeel (High Chaparral), Lot 67, who was bought from the draft of Arrowfield Stud for $180,000.

Capitalist’s second crop of yearlings proved popular throughout the day and he finished the opening session as the leading sire by aggregate, being responsible for 11 yearlings selling for a gross of $2,175,000 at an average of $197,727.

The Yarraman Park-based sire I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit) recorded the best average (with three or more lots sold) of the day finishing up with three yearlings sellings for $680,000 at an average of $226,667.
