A colt by Newgate Farm’s exciting stallion Capitalist (Written Tycoon) smashed the previous record set during the opening session at the Inglis Classic Yearling Sale on Sunday and he handed the auction house another new benchmark on Monday as George Moore paid $625,000 for another colt by the son of Written Tycoon (Iglesia).

Capitalist’s headline colt on Sunday was purchased by James Harron for $600,000 and at the close of day two the stallion’s statistics made for impressive reading, having been responsible for 15 yearlings selling for an aggregate $3,390,000 at an average of $226,000, which was better only by Written Tycoon (Iglesia), who finished the day with an average of $233,333. He stood for a fee of $55,000 (inc GST) in 2018.

The Newgate Farm resident has hit the ground running with his first runners, headed by his ultra-talented son Profiteer, who landed the Inglis 2YO Millennium (RL, 1100m) at Randwick on Saturday. The stallion’s total winner count stands at four, while his first-crop includes six stakes horses and is currently sitting at the top of Australia’s leading first-season sire table by earnings.

During Sunday’s session of the Inglis Classic Yearling Sale, George Moore and Team Moore Racing spent $515,000 on two lots and they massively upped the ante during the second session at the sale on Monday, outlying a further $925,000 on three more colts.

The session topper was Lot 374 who was consigned by Kitchwin Hills. Moore said he rated the colt as the best horse in the sale, but admitted the team were forced to go above budget to secure the youngster.

"He's the best horse of the sale by far," said Moore.

"The stallion is flying. We thought this horse would probably make $400,000, but Capitalist has come out and won the big race on the weekend, so the price has just gone up 50 per cent.

"We'll syndicate him, we've probably sold about 50 per cent of the horse now, so we're going to syndicate the other 50 per cent if anyone wants to come in on it."

Moore is confident the colt has enough precocity to get out early and already has him down as a possible candidate for the 2021 Breeders’ Plate (Listed, 1000m), which Capitalist himself landed en route to Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m) glory in 2015.

"In my opinion he's the right size for a Capitalist - he's not overly big, he's just a powerhouse - and he's got great temperament," Moore said.

"As James Harron said the other day, these Capitalists have got the right head, mind-wise, for Hong Kong or racing anywhere.

"We're looking for these early, precocious two-year-old types. Capitalist is doing it right now and we bought the Invader for the exact-same purpose.

"He's going to go back to the farm, we're going to break him in pretty quickly and target the early two-year-old races here, probably the Breeders Plate or the Maribyrnong Plate and hopefully he does the job for us."

The session topping colt is the first foal out of dual-winning Casino Prince (Flying Spur) mare Theatric, who is herself out of the winning Tale Of The Cat (Storm Cat) mare Arziki.

Arziki is a daughter of November Song (Zabeel), making her a half-sister to Group 3 scorer November Flight (Flying Spur) - the dam of 2019 All Aged Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) and now Aquis Farm resident Pierata (Pierro), Group 3 winner Ashokan (More Than Ready) and Group 3-placed two-year-old Jet Propulsion (Rubick), while she is also the grandam of Group 3 scorer Our Playboy (Sebring).

Theatric herself was purchased for a mere $15,000 via the Inglis Digital Monthly Sale in 2017 and Richard McClenahan, who bred the son of Capitalist, described Monday’s result as ‘life-changing.’

“For us this is a life-changing result,” said McClenahan. “We put a lot of work in to source the mares and do the matings and to get a result like this is phenomenal. Although he was very busy during the inspections, this result is beyond our wildest dreams.

“We were hoping he would be around the $250,000-$300,000 at best if we had the right people there, but he just blew it out of the water.

“This is the mare's first foal. He’s always been an outstanding colt from the day he was born but this result. I’m just speechless, I can’t believe this has really happened. It’s unbelievable.

“We bought the mare off Damon Gabbedy because I liked the family and know it well through Kitchwin Hills and we bred her to Capitalist.

“It’s been a really strong week, it’s a really strong sale, plenty of buyers here, we’ve sold a few others really well too so we’re delighted. And staggered!’’

Theatric has a weanling colt by Merchant Navy (Fastnet Rock) and was covered by Magna Grecia (Invincible Spirit) last November.

Kitchwin’s Mick Malone said with the Capitalist hitting the headlines on the track it was the perfect time to sell a yearling by the sire.

“With a Capitalist winning the Millennium on Saturday and other good early horses he’s throwing, everybody wants a piece of him,’’ Malone said.

“There’s been huge interest all week with this bloke, he’s just been flat out. There’s just something special about him.

“We’ve been busy as hell. It’s a real ‘type’ sale now, if you’ve got the right product, they’ll launch in the buyers. They’ll even overlook the pedigree a bit.

“It’s not about the pedigree here, it’s about the type. If you’ve got a type with good X-Rays, good scope, you’re away. We’re rapped. Everyone’s winning here.’’

Later on in the day, Capitalist was handed yet another good result when Jean Dubois of Woodpark Stud went to $380,000 for a filly by the stallion from the Newgate Farm draft.

Catalogued as Lot 396, the filly is out of US Listed winner Tricky Zippy (City Zip) and she is herself a half-sister fellow stakes winner Eye Luv Lulu (Pollard’s Vision).

Further back the colt comes from the same family as stakes winner Lord Ofthe Thunder (Lord Ballado) and Starita (Star De Naskra) - the dam of Listed winner Honky Tonk Tune (Cure The Blues). SF Bloodstock purchased Tricky Zippy for US$135,000 at the 2017 Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale and she has a weanling filly by Capitalist and was covered by his barnmate Tassort (Brazen Beau) last October.

Pierro Dubois - son of trainer Jean - said they only inspected the filly once, but that she left such an impression they had to leave the complex with her in tow.

“She looked really precocious,” said Pierro Dubois. “Capitalist right now is obviously in top form at the moment and this filly is out of a mare by City Zip and it is a cross we really like.

“She just looked like a professional coming out of her box. We actually only looked at her once and when a yearling takes your eye like she did, you just have to go for it.”

Newgate Farm’s Jim Carey said he hoped she would evolve into a candidate for the Inglis 2YO Millennium.

“She’s a quality, mature filly, everything you’d hope to get when you breed a mare of that quality to Capitalist,” said Carey.

“Hopefully she’ll be back here in the Millennium next year so we can win it again with a Capitalist, just as Profiteer did.’’

Newgate Farm finished the day as the leading vendor by aggregate, selling 25 yearlings over the past two days for a gross of $3,610,000 and Carey was very satisfied with the farm’s results.

“It’s been fantastic, Inglis has done a fantastic job, they brought up a huge crowd to the farm a couple of weeks ago and of that crowd, a lot of them have bought our horses here so that’s important and we’re very grateful to the Inglis team,’’ Carey said.

“And Capitalist, so the market should want him. He’s everything the Australian marketplace craves in a stallion.’’
