Tasmanian Yearling Sale set to commence

3 minute read

122 lots catalogued for one-day Magic Millions sale

The Magic Millions Tasmanian Yearling Sale gets underway on Monday, with 122 lots catalogued for the one-day auction.

The auction has been the source of recent stars on the track, including Group 1 winners Mystic Journey (Needs Further), Palentino (Teofilo) and last year’s Magic Millions 2YO Clockwise Classic (1000m) winner Readily Availabull (Bull Point).

The sale gets underway at 10am (Tas time).

The auction comes three days after the last week’s Magic Millions Perth Yearling Sale, which was forced to be moved due to the coronavirus pandemic and there was also uncertainty around whether Victorians would be able to attend, thanks to the Victorian five-day lockdown, but Magic Millions’ Victoria and Tasmania manager, Tim Brown, said the sale was well-equipped to deal with any challenges thrown its way.

“I’ve got to congratulate the Tasmanian breeders and vendors on the time and due diligence they put into putting photographs on the website and doing videos of the horses of them walking,” Brown told Racing.com.

“There’s a lot of information this year which hasn’t been available previously. We can conduct an online sale and a lot of people can be on the mainland and bid very confidently and comfortably that it will be a success.”

The good news for Victorians hoping to attend was that from Saturday morning, Victoria was considered a low-risk area by the Tasmanian government and travel is permitted without having to quarantine.

“It’s a very important sale, we’ve got some good breeders – they’re enthusiastic breeders in Tasmania – and they attend a lot of other sales and purchase broodmares and the odd person pinhooks them back down here,” Brown said.

“Plenty of (good) horses have come out of this state. It’s a very serious part of our calendar.”

Meanwhile, Listed winner Turk Warrior (2 g Outreach - Ehor by Val Royal) proved too strong in the Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1200m) at Launceston on Sunday and in the process handed his Zululand (Fastnet Rock) half-brother a timely update ahead of him being offered during Monday’s sale.

A winner of two Listed races, the son of Widden Stud-based Outreach (Exceed And Excel) is out of the Listed-winning Val Royal (Royal Academy) mare Ehor, who is herself a daughter of Group 1 scorer Love To Dance (Citidancer).

The colt’s half-brother is consigned by Grenville Stud and he is being offered as Lot 106.
