The two-day Magic Millions Adelaide Yearling Sale gets underway on Tuesday morning, with Book 1 running to Lot 220 on Tuesday and continuing to Lot 337 on Wednesday which is then followed by Book 2.

Unsurprisingly given the strength of the yearling sales already conducted in 2021, Magic Millions managing Director Barry Bowditch is positive ahead of the South Australian sale that has produced the likes of Viddora (I Am Invincible), Amphitrite (Sebring) and Warning (Declaration Of War) in recent years.

“Breeders support this sale from all over Australia and what that does is bring a great diverse market to the sale from a buyer perspective as well,” said Bowditch.

“Whether you look at the sale from a trading point of view into Asia for breeze-up horses or trade horses or end users, this sale ticks all those boxes and the graduate success out of it is quite phenomenal over the years.”

Of the catalogue, 202 are BOBS eligible, 151 Super VOBIS nominated and 141 yearlings are SABOIS nominated. There is also good diversity in the sires represented with the progeny of 117 different sires including the 20 first crop stallions.

Sam Hayes’ Cornerstone Stud is offering a 31-strong draft at this year’s sale and is hopeful of a good sale buoyed by the positive mood currently in South Australia

“We’ve been watching our interstate friends have some really good sales and I think the mood in South Australia is as good as it’s been for quite a while,” Hayes told Racing.com.

“Racing SA have re-launched our breeders bonus scheme here - Racing Rewards - and it’s got the local trainers all fired up to buy some locally-bred horses.

“They are doing a big development at Murray Bridge, the racecourse development has been sensational and they have 300 boxes being built there. The broodmare band in SA is also starting to climb again, horse numbers are on the rise and it’s all good for our local racing and breeding economy.

“It’s been a long time and we’ve felt like we needed some good news but the current board of Racing SA, Nick Redman and the team, are genuinely doing a fantastic job and everyone here feels that.”

Last year’s Book 1 sale saw 292 lots sell for $11,116,500 at an average of $38,070 and median figure of $30,000 and while Hayes said that he would like to see the average rise, he notes that there are plenty of opportunities available to buyers at the sale.

“Opportunity really does knock here in Adelaide,” Hayes said.

“I would really like to see the average climb up towards $50,000 but there is a lot of good buying still in Adelaide and there will be a lot of horses between $30,000 to $70,000. We’ve bought a couple of the nicest yearlings here this year, probably that we’ve ever brought to the sale, so we are really backing it in and hoping for a good result.”

Selling commences at 10am local time.
