Outstanding race mare Pippie (Written Tycoon) was one of the most talked about lots of the Inglis Chairman’s Sale and she did not disappoint, leaving the ring after being purchased by Tasman Bloodstock, on behalf of Cressfield, for $1.8 million on Friday night.

Catalogued as Lot 47, and offered by Sledmere Stud, the daughter of Written Tycoon (Iglesia) won six of her 15 starts, including last year’s Oakleigh Plate (Gr 1, 1100m), while she added a second elite level win to her CV this season when she took out the AJ Moir Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m) last September. She retired the winner of $1,236,950 in career prize-money.

Darley’s stalwart stallion Exceed And Excel (Danehill) has been elected as the mare’s first cover and Cressfield’s Wayne Bedggood said he expected there to be stiff competition on the mare.

“We know the market is strong, quality horses make big money and she’s a quality horse. We knew we were going to have to be strong to get her,’’ Bedggood said.

“She was one of our top mares of the sale and we missed out on a couple of others so it was nice to take her home.’’

A $60,000 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale buy by her trainer Chris Meagher from the draft of her breeder Eureka Stud, Pippie is the only winner out of the six-time winner Coupe Express (Ne Coupez Pas), who was herself purchased by Eureka Stud for $26,000 at an Inglis Mixed Sale in 2015 carrying Pippie in utero.

Her second dam is the winner Gal Express (Success Express) who produced six winners including the Listed-placed Timely Truce (Brief Truce).

Pippie is the only stakes winner in three generations with dual Group 2 winner Merry Ruler (The Carpenter) being out of her fourth dam Merry Maggy (Vain).

Meanwhile, Sledmere’s Treen Murphy said she was thrilled to get the result for Pippie’s owner Glenn Heran.

“It was a pleasure to be able to bring a mare with this much quality to a sale like this and it is a great result for Glenn Heran and his team. To have the joy of watching her win two Group 1s on the racecourse and now to sit there and watch her go through must be amazing.”

Before coming to the Chairman’s Sale Pippie was stabled at Murphy’s farm and she said everyone on the property had become very attached to the mare.

“Nobody on the farm wanted to see her go, she was a delight to have around,” she said. If every mare could have her temperament it would be very easy. She just gets on with the job and everybody loved her and she was just a pleasure to have - we will miss her for sure.

“We love the Chairman’s Sale.

“We’re absolutely delighted to be supporting it every year, it gets a great atmosphere, Inglis does an amazing job to get all the big buyers here for these incredible mares. These are some of the best offerings in Australia, if not the southern hemisphere and around the world.

"You don’t get a catalogue like this just anywhere.’’
