Inglis Chairman’s Sale finishes with impressive 91 per cent clearance

At the close of trade on the first session of the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale, Inglis reported an aggregate of $28,235,000 - the highest ever achieved at the sale and Inglis’ managing director Mark Webster was blown away by the strength of the market.

“What a night! So many fantastic results for so many fantastic clients, it was very satisfying seeing those results for the people who supported this sale,’’ Webster said.

“Our industry is in wonderful shape and with the yearling sales, the weanling sale and now the start of the broodmare sales being so strong and resilient to global financial indifferences, there is no denying we are involved in one of the strongest industries and sports in the world at present in Australia.

“The Chairman’s Sale is a wonderful event, credit to my team for putting on such a magnificent night and to those who supported it along the way, be it as presenters or buyers tonight.’’

With last year’s sale held online, the statistics are incomparable, but the $28,235,000 gross for 66 lots sold at a clearance of 53 per cent on Friday is up 22 per cent on the $23,235,000 aggregate recorded in 2019.

Meanwhile, Friday’s average of $532,736 represents a massive 26 per cent rise on the 2019 average of $422,455 while the closing median on Tuesday was $330,00 up 17 per cent on the $280,000 recorded at the sale two years ago.

During the evening, a total of seven mares sold for $1 million or more while a further nine sold for $500,000 or more and the sale’s average of $532,736 is the highest of any mare sale in the southern hemisphere.

Coolmore finished the night as the leading buyer spending $5.1 million on three mares, while Newgate Farm finished night as the leading vendors by aggregate selling eight mares for $6,055,000 at an average of $756,875.

Holbrook Thoroughbreds were crowned the leading vendors by average (with three or more sold), selling three mares for total receipts of $3,010,000 at an average of $1,003,333.

The Inglis Breeding Stock Sales Series concludes at Riverside on Sunday with the Australian Broodmare Sale, which begins at 10am.
