The New Zealand Bloodstock National Weanling Sale gets underway at Karaka on Friday, with the first of the 120 lots to sell due to go through the ring at 11am.

The weanling sale returns to the Karaka complex in Auckland having been forced online last year due to the coronavirus pandemic and NZB's bloodstock sales manager Danny Rolston is confident there are plenty of opportunities for people looking to invest in weanlings.

"There are numerous opportunities for buyers wishing to pinhook at all ends of the weanling market in this particular sale," Rolston said.

"For some purchasers, investing at a moderately low cost in comparison to the returns that pinhooked weanling purchases make as yearlings is an enticing prospect.

"There are also opportunities for buyers wishing to make more lucrative investments, with a number of top New Zealand consignors investing in a premium level of stock, and enjoying profitable rewards."

The sale has been a good source of winners over the years with an impressive score of eight Group 1 wins and 59 stakes wins in the current five seasons. Headlined by Group 1-winning pair Callsign Mav (Atlante) and Jennifer Eccles (Rip Van Winkle), who were purchased for NZ$3,000 and NZ$5,000 in 2017 respectively.

There have also been a number of updates in recent weeks with Lots 47 and 61 both being closely related to Rondinella (Ocean Park) who finished second in both the Sydney Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) and Chairman's Quality (Gr 2, 2600m). Lot 84 meanwhile is from the family of the Annabel Neasham-trained Rosehill Guineas (Gr 1, 2000m) winner Mo'unga (Savabeel).

Weanlings offered at the sale will be eligible to enter the lucrative Karaka Millions Series.
