At the close of trade, Magic Millions managing director Barry Bowditch expressed his delight at the day’s action, which finished with an aggregate of $17,948,500 with 160 lots selling at a clearance of 84 per cent.

“It’s been a fantastic day of trade,” Magic Millions managing Director Barry Bowditch said. “Obviously the Shadwell Stud Australasia Dispersal was a huge highlight of the day.

“For an unreserved dispersal there was great bidding all the way through. There’s an insatiable thirst for quality across the industry right now and that was evident through the dispersal and also across the day as a whole.

“We were confident that we had a group of horses that buyers would want to get involved with and it’s happened in droves here today.

“To have an average well over $100,000, a gross of almost $18 million and a very healthy clearance rate of 84 per cent is a fantastic beginning to what looks a great fortnight of trade.”

With a significantly smaller catalogue last year comparisons are difficult, but the average of $112,178 recorded on Thursday represented a 78 per cent increase on the $62,917 recorded during the 2019 edition of the sale. Meanwhile, the median finished on Thursday at $51,000 up 45 per cent on $35,000 recorded in 2019.

The leading buyer on Thursday was Justin Bahen, who purchased five weanlings for a gross of $1,380,000 at an average of $650,000, while Bahen teamed up with Rosemont to purchase two lots for $1,300,000 at an average of $650,000.

Yarraman Park’s I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit) finished the day as the leading sire by both average (with three or more lots sold), having six lots sell for total receipts of $2,825,000 at an average of $470,833.

Shadwell Stud Australasia Unreserved Dispersal, who were offered by Yarraman Park, finished the day as the leading vendors, selling 20 lots for an average of $271,750 at an aggregate of $5,435,000. Gilgai finished the day as the leading vendors by average (with three or more lots sold) selling three weanlings for an aggregate of $1,900,000 at an average of $633,333.
