Coolmore’s Tom Magnier made his feelings for multiple Group winner Mizzy (Zoustar) felt at the Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale on Tuesday, beating off fierce competition for the daughter of Zoustar (Northern Meteor) to secure her for $2.2 million.

Catalogued as Lot 528 and offered as part of the Newgate Consignment, the five-year-old mare landed the three consecutive Group races in 2019 when she took out the Toy Show Quality (Gr 3, 1100m), Sheraco Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) and Golden Pendant (Gr 2, 1400m).

A winner of $1,690,030 in career prize-money, Mizzy has been unlucky not to add a top-flight victory to her CV this season, having just been touched off by Savatiano (Street Cry) in the Canterbury Stakes (Gr 1, 1300m) on March 6 and she backed up that performance with another second place finish behind Krone (Eurozone) in the Coolmore Classic (Gr 1, 1500m) at Rosehill a week later.

Mizzy’s race record was impressive and she also boasts a top-class pedigree, being out of Listed-winning Magnus (Flying Spur) mare Missy Cummings.

Missy Cummings herself is out of three-time stakes winner Lady Knockout (Serheed), who is herself a daughter of Group 2 winner Prime Again (Marooned).

Prime Again is also the dam of Listed-winning duo Young Lionel (Blackfriars) and Expunge (Gilded Time), while further back this is also the same family as Listed winner and Group 2-placed Like A Butterfly (Blackfriars).

“She’s one of the nicest physicals of the sale and we are delighted to get her,” said Tom Magnier. “This is for a new partnership. She should have probably been a Group 1 winner. She was bred by Robert Crabtree, who we have a great association with, so we are looking forward to getting her home.

“The figure just shows the strength in the market in Australia at the moment, you nearly have to put a zero behind your first valuation. It is a great indication for Magic Millions, they have the most exciting sale going on at the moment.”

Magnier said a stallion for Mizzy had yet to be decided, but Triple Crown hero Justify (Scat Daddy) and their new international star Wootton Bassett (Iffraaj) were among the leading contenders.

“We will take her home and make a plan, we have a really exciting roster including Justify again and the new stallion Wootton Bassett, who is fully booked already, but we will be heavily supporting him this year,” said Magnier.

Later on in the afternoon, Coolmore Stud teamed up with Go Bloodstock to purchase a mare from the Shadwell Australia dispersal, parting with $1.7 million for winning Lonhro (Octagonal) mare Telaawa, who was offered carrying a sibling to Group 3 winner Minhaaj (Exceed And Excel).

The mare is out of dual-winning Danehill Dancer (Danehill) mare Magic Harmony, making her a half-sister to Group 3 scorer Charmed Harmony (Hussonet) and Grade 3 winner Suyoof (Magic Albert).

Magic Harmony herself is a half-sister to Group 3 scorer Life’s A Bounty (Bahamian Bounty) and Listed winner Miss Prospect (Rory’s Jester) - the dam of Group 1 winner and now Chatsworth Stud-based sire Reward For Effort (Exceed And Excel) and dual Listed scorer Consular (Royal Academy).

Meanwhile, Miss Prospect is also the grandam of 2013 Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Overreach (Exceed And Excel) and Group 2 scorer Standout (Exceed And Excel).
