Having purchased 26 lots on the first day of the Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale on Tuesday, Mr Zhang's Written Tycoon Syndicate added ten further purchases to their haul on the second day and they were headed by winning Pierro (Lonhro) mare Soul Purpose - paying Element Hill $650,000 for the mare.

Catalogued as Lot 1054, the mare is a half-sister to dual Group 3 winner Solar Charged (Charge Forward) - the dam of multiple Group 1-winning champion Sunlight (Zoustar), who became the most expensive mare sold in Australia when she was purchased by Coolmore for $4.2 million at last year's edition of the Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale.

Meanwhile, Solar Charged is also the dam of Group 3 winner Sisstar (Zoustar) and she is also a half-sister to Listed scorer Causeway Queen (Giant's Causeway).

Soul Purpose was offered carrying her first foal by Widden Stud-based sire Zoustar (Northern Meteor), meaning the resulting foal will be three-quarter sibling to both Sisstar and Sunlight.

Yulong CEO Sam Fairgray told Racing & Sports Bloodstock the mare would now be covered by their new resident stallion Written Tycoon (Iglesia) and he was excited to see her join their broodmare band, given the high-class family she hails from.

"We were pleased to be able to buy into that family," said Fairgray. "It is a highly regarded family. She is in foal to Zoustar, so we will get a close relation to Sunlight and Sisstar.

"There are a lot of fillies in that family and as well as Sunlight there is also Sisstar, so it is only going to keep on improving. Written Tycoon does very well with fast families, so we are really pleased to be able to secure her."

Earlier on in the day, the Written Tycoon Syndicate went to $525,000 to secure the Listed-winning French-bred Redoute's Choice (Danehill) mare Lilac Fairy, who was offered in foal to Ballylinch Stud's superstar stallion Lope De Vega (Shamardal).

Catalogued as Lot 860 and offered by Segenhoe Stud, the mare found herself in Australia having been bought by Aquis Farm for 300,000gns at the 2019 edition of the Tattersalls December Mares Sale when she was carrying a filly by Siyouni (Pivotal) in utero, who was foaled down in Australia.

The mare is out of dual-winning Selkirk (Sharpen Up) mare Border Bloom, who is herself a daughter of Group 2 scorer Hanami (Hernando).

Further back the mare is from the same family as Listed winners Soho Rose (Hernando) and Dubai Rose (Dubai Destination) - the dam of dual Group 2 scorer The Juliet Rose (Monsun).

Fairgray said he expects the mare to match-up well with Written Tycoon.

"She is a stakes-winning Redoute's Choice mare in foal to one of the best stallion's in the world in Lope De Vega and physically she's going to be a lovely mare for Written Tycoon," said Fairgray.

"We bought another couple of Redoute's Choice mares, he is obviously a fantastic broodmare sire and he is going to be a stallion we will see in pedigrees for a very long time and we can't get enough of them. It was great to add her to our band."

Segenhoe's Brian Clarke told Racing and Sports Bloodstock he believed the Lope De Vega factor was a big attraction to the buying bench.

"She was very well bought," he said. "Obviously Lilac Fairy was a stakes winner in France and was imported in foal to Lope De Vega and she obviously has a Siyouni that was born on northern hemisphere time that is also in Australia and he will go into racing here.

"She is a beautiful mare and Lope De Vega is one of the best stallions in the world and I should think that was a big factor in her price. She is a very pretty mare and she has terrific action."

Yulong's thirst for daughter's of Redoute's Choice (Danehill) came to the fore again earlier on in the day, when the Written Tycoon Syndicate purchased another daughter of Arrowfield Stud's late breed-shaping stallion in the form of Miss Ballantine - securing the mare for $500,000.

Catalogued as Lot 908 and offered by Woodside Park Stud in foal to their former stallion Written Tycoon, the mare is out of the dual winning Sunday Silence (Halo) mare Glendelvine, who has already produced four winners, while she is also the grandam of stakes-placed Pembroke Castle (I Am Invincible).

Glendelvine herself is a half-sister to Group 1 winner Alverta (Flying Spur) and dual Group 3 winner Aerobatics (Exceed And Excel) as well as Listed winner Revolute (French Deputy).

To date Miss Ballantine has been mated exclusively to Written Tycoon, with her first foal a colt by the stallion selling to Bjorn Baker Racing and Jim Clarke for $180,000 at the Inglis Classic Yearling Sale earlier in the year, while a filly by the stallion was bought by James Harron for $230,000 at the Magic Millions National Weanling Sale last week.

With the Sunday Silence influence in her pedigree, Fairgray said the mare would match up well with Yulong's new Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m)-winning stallion Tagaloa (Lord Kanaloa) and she could head to him when he covers his first book of mares at the Victorian-based farm this spring.

"She's an interesting mare because she covers a lot of bases for us. Obviously she had a nice Written Tycoon weanling but also with her there is the option for her to go to Tagaloa in time," said Fairgray.

"Almond Eye is by Lord Kanaloa, out of Sunday Silence mare, so there are things like that in there which would make her an option for Tagaloa as well. We will see what her foal is like, but she may go to Tagaloa this year.

"She's had the three Written Tycoon after she foals this year and when we see the foal we will then make a decision and see where to go with her this spring."

The Written Tycoon Syndicate are the leading buyers at the Magic Millions National Weanling Sale, having purchased 36 mares for an aggregate of $15,215,000 at an average of $422,639.

Over the two days of trade, buyers from Victoria have spent $44,991,500 on 136 mares, which is over $10 million more than buyers from New South Wales and Fairgray said it is a very exciting time for the state of Victoria.

"The investment into Victoria is great," he said. "I think on the first day Victoria bought 52 per cent of the mares, so that is obviously great to see. There is a lot of development coming here with Widden coming to Victoria and Darley are standing and shuttling some really exciting horses to Victoria.

"Obviously our stallion ranks are bolstered with Written Tycoon, Tagaloa and Lucky Vega, it is really encouraging for Victoria and things are really starting to look very exciting."
