At the close of trade on Wednesday at the Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale, the auction house reported that over the two days 394 lots sold for an aggregate of $98,575,000 at a clearance of just under 88 per cent and Magic Millions managing director Barry Bowditch told Racing & Sports Bloodstock was extremely satisfied with the day’s trade.

“We set a huge benchmark yesterday but it was a good, solid day’s trade with good momentum through the day and that flowed right to the last lot,” Bowditch said.

“To hold a $250,000 average and a clearance rate of 88 per cent and a gross ticking towards $100 million is sensational. I couldn’t be happier.

“There was value to be found if people kept their lists long and did their work. I am sure there will be people going home tonight and growing their lists for tomorrow.

“We have an exceptional lot of mares to go under the hammer on Day Three and I expect more strong bidding.”

With a coronavirus hit last year comparisons are difficult, but the average of $250,190 recorded represented a massive 70 per cent increase on the $146,397 recorded during the 2019 edition of the sale. Meanwhile, the median finished on Wednesday at $120,000 up 71 per cent on $70,000 recorded in 2019.

The comparisons are also massively altered due to the Shadwell dispersal which fetched $25,135,000 - over a quarter of the sale’s aggregate on day one of the sale on Tuesday.

The Written Tycoon Syndicate are currently the leading buyers at the Magic Millions National Weanling Sale, having purchased 36 mares for an aggregate of $15,215,000 at an average of $422,639.

Leading the way in terms of vendors are still the Shadwell Dispersal and Julian Blaxland’s Blue Sky Premium Consignment, who did not offer anything on the second day of the sale.

Shadwell aside, Glenesk Thoroughbreds are sitting second in terms of leading vendors by average (with three or more lots sold), having sold ten mares for a gross of $4,210,000 at an average of $421,000.

The third and final day of the sale kicks off at 10am on Thursday.
