After a record breaking National Broodmare Sale concluded last Thursday, following on from a hugely successful National Weanling Sale the week prior, attention on the Gold Coast now turns to the Magic Millions National Yearling Sale which begins its two-day run on Tuesday.

Book 1 begins with Lot 1401, a colt by the late champion sire Redoute's Choice (Danehill), who will be the last yearling by the stallion to be offered as a yearling at public auction.

"I know David Chester is very excited to be offering the last Redoute's yearling," Magic Millions managing director Barry Bowditch told Racing & Sports on Monday.

"He actually offered the first Redoute's yearling, so to bookend it is fantastic. Physically this colt is a great representation of his sire and Redoute's has been such a great stallion for many years now and it will be the end of an era come 10.05am tomorrow."

Being offered by Arrowfield Stud as agent, the colt is the second living foal out of the winning mare La Fouine Tail (Neo Universe) who is a half-sister to Japanese Grade 2 winner Gustave Cry (Heart's Cry).

Bowditch said that he was excited by the catalogue that has been assembled for this year's National Yearling Sale. A total of 125 individual sires are represented including I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit), Not A Single Doubt (Redoute's Choice), Snitzel (Redoute's Choice), So You Think (High Chaparral) and Zoustar (Northern Meteor) as well as progeny from leading young sires including Extreme Choice (Not A Single Doubt), Capitalist (Written Tycoon), Flying Artie (Artie Schiller) and Shalaa (Invincible Spirit).

"We are really excited by the catalogue that we've put together for the National Yearling Sale," Bowditch said. "On paper, when we put it together we were very confident that it was appealing to the eye and now that the horses are on the ground we are happy that we think we have strong representation of yearlings by quality sires.

"A lot of these horses will then go on and perform well on the racetrack - it's a sale where buyers can find a diamond in the rough and find some value in the sale. This is also a sale where not all the big buyers will be here."

Bowditch did however note that there were a number of Victorian-based buyers who have been unable to get up to the Gold Coast with the state now in a third lockdown which could leave a hole in the market.

"Obviously we've had a lot of trainers come in who have sat out the weanling and broodmare catalogues but then we've had plenty of agents stay up and continue on the marathon into this part of the sale," he said. "It's obviously disappointing that we've not been able to get all of our Victorian buyers to the sale.

"That will be a hindrance - we have a strong clientele of trainers down there who were not able to get here and they will obviously leave a void in the market."
