After a record price was set on Sunday for a weanling, Monday's Great Southern Broodmare Sale at Oaklands saw another record set when Suman Hedge Bloodstock went to $560,000 to secure the Group placed mare Too Good Too Hard (All Too Hard) who was offered as a racing and breeding proposition.

Offered by Mill Park Stud, the five-year-old mare Too Good Too Hard has won six times and placed in another six of her 19 career starts for trainer Phillip Stokes who bought her for $120,000 at the 2017 Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale from the draft of her breeder Mill Park Stud, who remained in her ownership for her racing career.

She placed second in the Furphy Sprint (Gr 3, 1100m) at Flemington last October and has also placed three times at Listed level and Mill Park Stud's Chris Watson said the price more than exceeded their expectations.

"We knew she was a lovely mare coming here and had great credentials to sell well but that was well beyond expectations," said Watson.

"It's an absolute thrill to get a result like this. Inglis have done an enormous job and have bought some great buyers here to this sale and we're extremely pleased and thrilled.''

The mare looks set to be covered by the now Yulong-based Written Tycoon (Iglesia) who looks set to be crowned champion sire in Australia this season.

Suman Hedge Bloodstock finished the Broodmare Sale as the leading buyer by aggregate having purchased just one lot. Rothwell Park was the leading vendor by average (with three or more lots sold) having sold three mares for $350,000 at an average of $116,667 while Mill Park Stud was the leading vendor by aggregate having sold two lots for $615,000.

A total of 12 lots sold for $100,000 or more with the second top lot coming when Merricks Station and Group 1 Bloodstock went to $200,000 to secure Ra Ra Epic (Drumbeats) from the draft of Bhima Thoroughbreds.

Overall 75 of the 112 lots offered were sold at a clearance rate of 67 per cent. The aggregate finished at $3,643,250 while the average was $48,577 and median was $23,000. Buyers from Victoria, NSW, WA, QLD and Tasmania were active along with New Zealand and Hong Kong-based purchasers.

At the 2019 renewal 206 of the 279 lots offered were sold for $5,231,850. The average finished at $25,397 whilst the median was $8,500, gains of 91 per cent and 170 per cent were seen in the average and median respectively at this year’s sale compared to the figures two years ago.

Inglis' General Manager of Bloodstock Sales and Marketing Sebastian Hutch was delighted with the results across the board over the two days.

"We've traded almost $15 million, have seen buyers participate both domestically and internationally and plenty of buyers and vendors are leaving with a smile on their face so it's very satisfying,'' Hutch said.

"I do need to thank and congratulate the vendors especially, they were understanding of our decision to delay this sale by three weeks due to Covid and many have been rewarded for their patience.

"This sale has a fabulous knack of producing great pinhook results and quality Group One horses and I have no doubt there will be top-quality performers out of the talent we have sold the past 48 hours.''
