A colt by Coolmore's So You Think (High Chaparral) topped the second and final day of the Inglis Great Southern Weanling Sale on Monday when bought by Mitchell Bloodstock for $290,000.

Sold by Makybe as Lot 321, the colt is the third foal out of the unraced mare Collins (Desert King) who is herself a sister to Makybe Diva (Desert King) being out of Tugela (Riverman). She is also a half-sister to Group Two winner and sire Musket (Redoute's Choice) and Valkyrie Diva (Jade Robbery) who produced the stakes winning trio Wonder Kid (Lonhro), C'est Beau La Vie (Bernardini) and Wales (Redoute's Choice).

James Mitchell, who was in attendance at Oaklands, told Racing & Sports Bloodstock that the colt has been bought for a new client who might re-sell him as a yearling next year.

"He was bought for a new client who is just dipping his toe in the water," said Mitchell.

"We'll monitor his progress and he probably will be re-offered, but it just depends on how he comes up.

"I thought he was a real quality horse. He wasn't over big, but he had a lot of quality and was a good mover. Obviously So You Think is a fantastic stallion down here and probably, up until recently, he's been quite under-rated.

"The colt's out of a full sister to one of the best mares we've ever seen in Australia, so pedigree-wise he had it all there and I thought he was a lovely quality colt."

Makybe's Joe Murray described the colt as 'a marquee offering''.

"We knew he was popular, he was always going to be, given he's out of a full sister to Makybe Diva, and by So You Think, so most people who saw him once came back for a second look at least,'' Murray said.

"The market was very strong for him straight away, we thought coming here $150,000 would be a good result, $200,000 would have been super but to get to $290,000 was just fantastic…we honestly couldn't have been happier with the result.

"The competition was strong the whole way along.''

So You Think had 11 lots sell during the Select Weanling session for a total of $1,200,500 at an average of $109,136 and median of $80,000 to finish the session as the leading sire by aggregate.

The So You Think colt was one of seven weanlings bought by Mitchell Bloodstock who finished the sale as the leading buyer by aggregate having spent $671,000.

Their other purchases included a Toronado (High Chaparral) colt who was bought for $160,000 from the draft of Rosemont Stud whilst they also spent $105,000 on a filly by Impending (Lonhro) from Ponderosa Park.

Mitchell said that he felt the market in Melbourne was comparable to that of the earlier weanling sales in Sydney and on the Gold Coast with there being plenty of demand for the better quality offerings.

"I think it's been on par. There is certainly good money here for the better quality stock," said Mitchell.

"There was some nice trade stock here I thought. We came down here looking to buy a couple of nice horses and I think we've done that. The market has held up, as it has throughout the year, and Inglis has done a great job getting people here, obviously in trying times and it's been a very solid market here."
