The Tattersalls July Sale got off to a strong start on the opening day on Wednesday with the Godolphin draft dominating proceedings with four of the top five prices on a day that saw 15 lots selling for 100,000 guineas or more. The clearance for the day was 93 per cent and the turnover of 5,952,100 guineas has been bettered only twice on the opening day of this fixture.

The most expensive lot to sell on Wednesday was winning mare Aureum (Medaglia d'Oro) who sold to Blandford Bloodstock for 220,000. Offered as Lot 125, https://www.tattersalls.com/sales/july-sale/4DCGI/Sale/JUL21/Main/Overview the four-year-old mare was sold in foal to Invincible Spirit (Green Desert) and she is a half-sister to Group Three winner and the Grade One placed mare Nemoralia (More Than Ready).

"She has been bought for an established owner-breeder client of ours," said Blandford Bloodstock's Tom Goff.

"She has a fantastic page, and she made a lot of money as a yearling. She is a lovely, lovely mare, the sister was top top class over here and she is in-foal to a great stallion.

"We knew she wasn't going to be given away here, the entire draft has some stand-out mares. She is quality, and fingers crossed she carries a good foal and is a successful broodmare, which she has been bought to be."

The second most expensive lot to sell was Shamardal (Giant's Causeway) mare Excellent View who was sold to Charlie Gordon-Watson for 200,000gns from the draft of Barton Stud. She was sold in foal to leading young sire Mehmas (Acclamation) with a filly foal by that same sire at foot.

"She is a smashing mare, she had a lovely Mehmas foal at foot who is a good example of what she is carrying, and in this sale she stood out a bit. The foal is good and she has got a blacktype runner this year. She was sold for a good Irish client and I am delighted for them," said Tom Blain of Barton Stud.

First Light Racing and Paul Willetts purchased two lots on Wednesday, the most expensive of those being Norma (New Approach) who was secured for 85,000gns. The five-year-old has won once and also placed second in the Prix de la Calonne (Listed, 1600m) at Deauville last August. The combination also purchased three-year-old Alsephina (Sea The Stars) from the Godolphin draft for 22,000gns.

Tweenhills and Widden bought one lot; 11-year-old mare Nozhar (Iffraaj) from the draft of Shadwell for 85,000gns. The daughter of Iffraaj (Zafonic) was unraced and sold in foal to Earthlight (Shamardal). The dam of two winners to date, she is a half-sister to Grade Three winner Pasar Silbano (Elnadim), who is the dam of Zousain (Zoustar).

Paul Moroney Bloodstock also got his name on the buyers list, purchasing three-year-old filly Pitch Blue (Muhaarar) with Belannah Stud for 16,000gns and Moroney, Pegasus Bloodstock and Armando Duarte bought Marjoram (Kodiac) for 15,000gns.
