A colt by Spendthrift Farm's Into Mischief (Harlan's Holiday) topped Fasig-Tipton's The Saratoga Sale when bought for US$2.6 million by MV Magnier, after outbidding Besilu Stables, during the second and final session of the sale on Tuesday evening.

Sold by Gainesway as agent, the colt is the second foal out of Grade One winner Paola Queen (Flatter).

Practical Joke - another son of Into Mischief - stands at Coolmore's Ashford Stud in Kentucky and is currently second in the leading first season sires table in the US by earnings.

"He's by a very good sire. He's out of a very good race mare … Let's hope he's as good as Practical Joke," said Magnier.

"He has a lot of credentials, he's by the right sire. We'll bring him back to the farm … He'll stay in America," Magnier added.

The colt was bred by Don Alberto Corporation who bought Paola QUeen for US$1.7 million at the 2017 Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale.

"You see two per cent of horses that you sell in a year walk like that," said Bill Graves, general manager at Gainesway. "And they continue to walk like that … cool and calm the whole sale."

The colt was one of four lots bought by Magnier during the sale for a total spend of US$3.525 million while Gainesway sold 12 of the 14 lots they offered for US$7.105 million at an average of US$592,083 and median of US$392,500.

Spendthirft Farm's Into Mischief had 14 of the 17 lots by him sell for US$8.080 million at an average of US$577,143 and median of US$425,000. He heads the leading sires table in the US / CAN this season with prize money earnings of US$14,368,526, over US$5.5 million clear of his nearest rival Curlin (Smart Strike).
