Arqana August Yearling Sale concludes

3 minute read

Major indicators decline from 2019 sale, Monceaux were leading vendors, Oliver St Lawrence leading buyer, Dubawi leading sire and Saxon Warrior leading first crop sire

The 2021 Arqana August Yearling Sale concluded in Deauville on Monday with the aggregate, average and median all showing declines from the 2019 sale. Two lots broke the €1 million barrier and 13 lots sold for €500,000 or more.

Overall in 2021, 246 of the 324 lots offered were sold producing a clearance rate of 76 per cent. The aggregate of €40,009,000 was down six per cent from €42,789,000 two years ago from when 228 lots sold. The average of €162,638 was down 13.3 per cent from €187,671 and the median fell 20 per cent from €125,000 in 2019 to €100,000.

  • Ecurie des Monceaux were leading vendors for the tenth consecutive year selling 33 lots for €9,062,000.
  • Oliver St Lawrence was the leading buyer having spent €3,430,000 on six yearlings.
  • Dubawi (Dubai Millennium), who was responsible for the €2.4 million sale topper, was the leading sire, with six lots by the Darley stallion selling for €5,160,000 at an average of €860,000.
  • Coolmore Australia shuttler Saxon Warrior (Deep Impact) was the leading first season sire with five yearlings having sold for €775,000 at an average of €155,000.

“The sale remained very international today and the percentage of horses sold was solid, which made the average slip a little compared to 2019,” said Arqana president Eric Hoyeau.

“Over the three days as a whole, the results were pleasing. The context was still uncertain when the catalogue was released and it is a relief to see that this edition is in line with the August Sales that we have held previously, just behind the exceptional year of 2019.

“This is only the third time the turnover has exceeded €40 million and the number of horses sold for €200,000 or more is the same as in 2018. We were fortunate to experience a sale in a near-normal atmosphere. We would like to thank our buyers once again who were active on site and remotely, as well as our vendors for having brought yearlings of this quality to the ring. After a year “off”, the v.2 makes its comeback tomorrow at Deauville.

“This sale has produced some very good horses, such as Coeursamba, Teppal and Olmedo, and we hope that it will continue on in the same vein following the success of the August Sale.”
