Aggregate, average and median all rise with Lope De Vega filly topping day three
Book 2 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale concluded in Newmarket on Wednesday evening with the aggregate, average and median all showing gains on the 2021 figures.
At the conclusion of the sale 633 lots had sold for 60,780,500gns, up 11 per cent from the 2021 figure of 54,512,000gns when 650 lots sold. The average finished at 96,020gns, up 14 per cent from 83,865gns, while the median rose 13 per cent to 70,000gns from 62,000gns a year ago. Seven lots sold for 500,000gns or more.
The most expensive lot to sell on Wednesday was a filly by Ballylinch Stud's Lope De Vega (Shamardal) who was bought by Stroud Coleman Bloodstock on behalf of Godolphin for 650,000gns.
Sold by Ballylinch Stud as Lot 1303, the filly is out of the Galileo (Sadler's wells) mare Gallitea who is a half-sister to dual Group 1 winner Chriselliam (Iffraaj) and dual Group 2 winner Very Special (Lope De Vega).
The filly had received an update since the catalogue was published when Gallitea's first foal, Ovideo - also by Lope De Vega - finished third in the Group 3 Acomb Stakes (7f).
"It is very exciting. She is very nice, very athletic and it was a good update in the pedigree. She is very light on her feet and is for Godolphin," said Anthony Stroud.
Blandford Bloodstock's Tom Goff was left the underbidder and Ballylinch Stud's managing director John O'Connor said: "I knew she'd sell well, I did not expect that, but when you get a clash between two very interested buyers these things can happen. There were lots of people on her too. This is a family we have been associated with for a long time. I originally bought Ingabelle from Tom Lacy, Tony Lacy's father, and we have bred most of the blacktype on this page.
"Lope de Vega's stock appeals to so many people, he is such a good sire - we have been blessed to have him. It is wonderful when things go your way, it is almost a surreal feeling."
Lope De Vega had 13 lots sell during Book 2 for 2,567,000gns at an average of 197,462gns.

600,000gns for Ballyvolane's Starspangledbanner colt
Richard Knight Bloodstock went to 600,000gns to secure Ballyvolane Stud's Starspangledbanner colt on Wednesday, the second most expensive lot to sell on Wednesday.
Catalogued as Lot 1321, the colt is the first foal out of winning mare Great Dame (Dandy Man) , a half-sister to stakes winners Donnerschlag (Bahamian Bounty) and Izzy Bizy (Kodiac), dam of stakes winning juvenile Dizzy Bizu.
Ballyvolane's John Foley was delighted with the sale: "She is owned by myself and good friend Jason Kelly, who is David O'Meara's assistant, and he liked the mare. We bought the syndicate out at the sale and bred her, and this is her first foal.
"I am delighted, he is a lovely, lovely horse and has always been a mighty sort. He has great action and some of the most respected judges here liked him."
Bloodstock agent Amanda Skiffington was left the underbidder and successful purchaser Richard Knight commented: "He was the only one we picked out in this sale, I thought he was a lovely individual.
"He is by Starspangledbanner who I am a big fan of having had The Wow Signal. I like the fact that the mare was a useful two-year-old herself and he looks like he will be sharp. We felt he will be a great addition to the horses we have already bought. He is a horse who should not take a huge amount of time, is very athletic and vetted very well."
Book 3 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale begins on Thursday, with 642 yearlings catalogued for the two-day sale.
