Magic Attitude takes out Belmont Oaks
Coolmore Stud’s Galileo (Sadler’s Wells) was provided with his 89th Group 1 winner on Saturday when Magic Attitude (3 f ex Margot Did by Exceed And Excel) came from last to first to win the Belmont Oaks (Gr 1, 10f) on Saturday.
The three-year-old filly landed the Prix Vanteaux (Gr 3, 1800m) in May when trained by Fabrice Chappet and she was last seen finished fifth behind Fancy Blue (Deep Impact) in the Prix de Diane (Gr 1, 2100m). Owned by Lael Stables, Magic Attitude was transferred to Arnaud Delacour’s Maryland stable, with Saturday’s Grade 1 her first start for the trainer.
After racing at the back of the five runner field, the three-year-old filly showed an explosive turn of foot in the home straight to post a two and a quarter length victory over Antoinette (Hard Spun), while Neige Blanche (Anodin) was the same distance back in third.
"She duplicated (what she had been doing in the morning) in the afternoon," Delacour said.
"(This) is what she showed in France, a great turn of foot, not especially a long turn of foot. Javier [Velazquez] did a great job and he felt confident about knowing the filly and knowing how to ride her. I'm glad it worked out."
The filly shows the firepower Galileo possess’ when bred to fast mares, with Magic Attitude being the result of a mating between the son of Sadler’s Wells (Northern Dancer) and Margot Did (Exceed And Excel), whose three stakes victories came over five furlongs, including in the 2011 Nunthorpe Stakes (Gr 1, 5f). Margot Did also produced Mission Impassible (Galileo), who landed the Prix de Sandringham (Gr 2, 1600m) in 2018.
Further back this is the same family as Group 1 winner Caradak (Desert Style), Group 3 winners Divine (Dark Angel) and Cajarian (Shahrastani) and Very Sydney (Danehill), who won the Centaurea Stakes (Listed, 1800m) at Morphettville in 2006.
Magic Attitude is bred on the same cross as last season’s Derby (Gr 1, 1m4f) winner Anthony Van Dyck, who is out of 2008 Blue Diamond Prelude (f) (Gr 3, 1100m) winner Believe'n'succeed.
The filly becomes the eighth Group 1 winner for Exceed And Excel as a broodmare; joining the aforementioned Anthony Van Dyck, Bounding, Alizee, Ten Sovereigns, Prompt Response, Astern and Crown Prosecutor.
