The Brad Cox-trained Monomoy Girl (6 m Tapizar - Drumette by Henny Hughes) scored a good seasonal debut in Sunday’s Bayakoa Stakes (Gr 3), the first time she had raced since winning the Breeders’ Cup Distaff (Gr 1, 9f) at Keeneland on November 7.

The Spendthrift Farm-raced mare raced in third and wide, outside the leaders Finite (Munnings) and Our Super Freak (Mineshaft). She went to the front on straightening to pull clear under Florent Geroux and go on to score by two lengths on a sloppy track in a time of 1:45.92. Our Super Freak finished second with Finite holding on to take third, another length and a quarter back.

"Florent went to working on her a little bit earlier than normal but she was able to punch on down the lane and finish up well," said Cox "I'm very proud of her performance."

Monomoy Girl is likely to be aimed towards the Apple Blossom Handicap (Gr 1, 8.5f) on April 17.

"We'll talk it over with Spendthrift but that's kind of been the short-term goal, the Apple Blossom here in the spring," said Cox.

Monomoy Girl was bought by Spendthrift Farm for US$9.5 million at last year’s Fasig-Tipton The November Sale having been originally purchased for US$100,000 by BSW Bloodstock and Liz Crow at the 2016 Keeneland September Yearling Sale.

She has now won 14 of her 16 career starts with six of victories those coming at Grade 1 level and her career earnings totalling over US$4.5 million. She is one of six winners out of winning Henny Hughes (Hennessy) mare Drumette making her a half-sister to Grade 2 winner Mr Monomoy (Palace Malice).
