Super Stock takes out Saturday’s Arkansas Derby
The Steve Asmussen-trained Super Stock (3 c ex Super Girlie by Closing Argument) became the second Grade 1 winner for his sire Dialed In (Mineshaft) when he won Saturday’s Arkansas Derby (Gr 1, 9f).
Super Stock was settled down on the rail in third with Caddo River (Hard Spun) leading the field along. Asked for his run, Super Stock came down the centre of the track to take the lead with 200 metres left to travel and scored a two and a half length victory over Caddo River who held on for second by a head over Concert Tour (Street Sense).
In winning Saturday's race Super Stock earnt 100 qualifying points in the Road to the Kentucky Derby and now sits third on the leaderboard with 109 points.
"We never, ever imagined in our wildest dreams that we would be able to compete in racing at this level," Marilyn Asmussen, the wife of co-owner Keith Asmussen and Steve's mother told Bloodhorse.
"To see your son successful at what he's chosen to do in life, there's no bigger reward for a parent than that. This will be embedded in our hearts forever."
Bought for US$70,000 at the 2019 Keeneland September Yearling Sale by Keith Asmussen and Erv Woolsey, Super Stock has now won two of his eight career starts and placed a further four times. He is one of four winners and the only stakes winner out of Super Girlie (Closing Argument) who is herself one of nine winners out of Beafleet (Afleet), grandam of Grade 1 winner Heir Kitty (Wildcat Heir).
Super Stock is one of 15 stakes winners for Dialed In who has also produced fellow Grade 1 winner Get Her Number. Dialed In’s 2021 fee at Darby Dan in Kentucky is set at US$15,000.
