1. Who is (are) your pick of the colts and why?
There are two colts who really stand out for me in our draft. Lot 69 the I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit) - Adrift (Zabeel) colt is a very precocious looking horse with a big hip, strong shoulder and a great mind. This colt was bred by Fairway Thoroughbreds and his mother Adrift was a Group 2 winner by Zabeel (Sir Tristram) and one of the few horses that can say they have beaten the great Winx (Street Cry). The I Am Invincible/Zabeel cross is one that is already proven to work so we are very excited about selling this colt at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.
Lot 39 is another early two-year-old type by champion sire Exceed And Excel (Danehill) out of the Group 3-winning mare Whistling Dixie (Pins). This colt is a Segenhoe Stud homebred and one that we think could make it back to the Gold Coast for the Magic Millions 2YO Classic (RL, 1200m) in 2021.
2. Who is (are) your pick of the fillies and why?
We have a strong group of fillies for the sale this year but a couple that stand out would be Lot 802 (So You Think - Spurs And Sashes (Flying Spur)) and Lot 270 (Not A Single Doubt - Elusive Wonder (Elusive Quality)).
The So You Think- Spurs And Sashes (Lot 802) is a beautiful filly with a great action and mind who just looks like a racehorse.
The Not a Single Doubt - Elusive Wonder (Lot 270) filly is very typical of the sire with great strength and quality who looks like she will be winning races pre-Christmas just like her three-quarter-sister Away Game who won the Calaway Gal Stakes (Listed, 1050m) last week and will be lining up as one of the main contenders in the Magic Millions 2YO Classic (RL, 1200m).
3. Who do you feel has improved most over the prep?
The yearling that has improved most through the prep would have to be Lot 812 the I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit) - Stellar Vinia (Redoute's Choice) filly. This filly came into the barn about eight weeks ago and was very backwards in her coat who had a lovely frame but hadn't filled into that yet. Darren Corbett our yearling manager and his team have done an incredible job with this filly who has turned inside out during the prep so we are really looking forward to showing her off at the sale come January.
4. How do you feel the 2020 sale will measure compared to previous renewals?
Prize-money levels are at an all time high here in Australia so there is no better time to buy a racehorse. Barry Bowditch and his team do a terrific job putting together the catalogue and attracting buyers from not just here but all over the world and along with all the events outside of the sale complex make the Magic Millions at the Gold Coast where everyone wants to be come January so hopefully that all translates into a strong sale.
5. What is the thing you like most about the Gold Coast in January?
The beach along with all the nice restaurants and bars make the Magic Millions one of if not the most enjoyable sales to attend.
