1. Who is (are) your pick of the colts and why?

We have some lovely colts across the draft and it is hard to single out just two or three, but I will have three which I believe will measure up well.

Lot 155 Pierro (Lonhro) - Our Squeezer (Redoute's Choice) colt who is bred on the very successful Pierro/Redoute's Choice cross. The yearling bears a strong resemblance to his sire and is a half-brother to stakes placed Tamarack (Redwood) and closely related to Horse of the Year and multiple Group 1 winning mare Bonneval (Makfi), as well as Lord Arthur (Camelot), Lady Cumquat (Duke Of Marmalade), Imposing Lass (Makfi), Full Of Spirit (Flying Spur), Charmont (High Chaparral), Champagne Harmony (Choisir), St Reims (Zabeel) and Champagne (Zabeel). Physically the colt is attractive, well-balanced and walks well.

Lot 102 Tarzino (Tavistock) - Miss Juventus (Anabaa) colt. An impressive youngster by Champion Australian 3YO Tarzino who won the Rosehill Guineas (Gr 1, 2000m), VRC Derby (Gr 1, 2500m), and finished a close second in the Australian Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m). The colt is out of the winning Anabaa (Danzig) mare Miss Juventus and is closely related to the likes of Atomic Force (Danehill Dancer), Red Striker (Red Giant), Kante (Postponed), Encounter (Tierce), and Show Of Force (Luskin Star).

Lot 145 Reliable Man (Dalakhani) - Oh So Royal (Danzero) colt. A handsome colt by Reliable Man who is very physical type of horse. He is a half-brother to current Group 1 winner Julius (Swiss Ace) and a full brother to the Group 1 placed 3YO Battenburg and a half-brother to the Group 2 placed Burnt Orange (Mossman). The colt is closely related to the Godolphin-raced Group 2 winner Vashka (Exceed And Excel) and stakes winner Renewal (Dream Ahead).

Lot 341 Telperion (Street Cry) - Tempo Manor colt. Out of a four time-winning General Nediym (Nediym) mare, the colt is by the talented racehorse Telperion and is extremely muscular. Although just a November 6 foal, he is very mature for his age and comes from an excellent speed family which has produced Ready To Rip (More Than Ready), Elliotto (Easy Rocking), Kenconcarne (Kenmare), Christmas Tree (Biscay), and Light Up The World (Rory's Jester).

2. Who is (are) your pick of the fillies and why?

Lot 232 Redwood (High Chaparral) - Romantically (Foreplay) filly. She is a gorgeous type, very athletic and oozes quality. The filly has a pedigree to go with her physique being a sister to the stakes winner Romancer. Her dam is a half-sister to Australian Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) and LKS MacKinnon Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m)  winner Sirmione (Encosta De Lago), while the family has been responsible for a number of quality performers such as Sunray (Zabeel), Rocking On (Zabeel), Millward (Defensive Play), Wolvette (Wolverton), Mr Merrymaker (Marceau), Force Of Impact (Imposing) and Headcutter (Twig Moss).

Lot 387 Reliable Man - Veva Girl Lot 387 filly.  She is a sister to the Group 1-placed 2YO Aalaalune and to smart two-year-old De La Terre, as well as a half-sister to stakes placed Black Thorn (Redwood). The filly is out of the Fastnet Rock (Danehill) mare Veva Girl – a daughter of Barawin (Barathea) – and is closely related to Jerezana (Lonhro), Osborne Bulls (Street Cry), Viridine (Poet's Voice) and Portview (Handy Proverb).

Lot 14 Tavistock (Montjeu) - Katie's Choice (Redoute's Choice) filly. She bears a strong resemblance to her broodmare sire. It is the family of stakes winners Kakakakatie (Zedative), the dam of Sebrakate (Sebring) and Quattro Katie (Zoustar), Bonaichi (Fusaichi Pegasus), Bonanova (Star Way), Fraternity (Star Way), St Klaire ( Bletchingly) and Telesto (Star Way).

3. Who do you feel has improved most over the prep?

The Reliable Man - Our Girl Madi (Smart Missile) (Lot 154 ) colt has made excellent progress through the preparation. A first foal, he was just an average sized horse at the beginning of the season but he has bloomed during the past six weeks and presents as a very nice colt.

4. How do you feel the 2020 sale will measure compared to previous renewals?

Always hard to compare one year to the next, but there is no doubt that New Zealand consistently produces quality horses and the overall success and durability of the Kiwi horse across all racing jurisdictions, makes the sale a must attend for those buyers looking to buy good sound racehorses.

 5. What is the thing you like most about the Karaka Sale?

The 'festival' atmosphere at New Zealand Bloodstock and the fantastic layout of the Karaka complex sees buyers enjoying outstanding hospitality during the sale week, excellent viewing areas for inspections, and the best of the country's foal crop assembled at the one sale, which explains the high rate of success the sale graduates enjoys from year to year.
