Kaphero Hits The Sales

3 minute read

Young sire Kaphero is a sentimental member of the stallion roster at Victoria's Swettenham Stud.

Adam Sangster acquired the stud after the death of its founder, his father Robert Sangster, in April 2004.

Kapchat, by Danehill's Golden Slipper winner Danzero from the G1 winning Centaine mare Kapchat, was from the last crop of foals produced by Swettenham Stud when it was headed by Robert Sangster.

The family retained an interest in the colt when he was sold to Lakeview Resources for $340,000 at the Magic Millions yearling sale at the Gold Coast.

Kaphero's first crop yearlings are on offer at the Inglis Victorian Premier sale starting on February 27. He will also be represented in the Melbourne Autumn Sale series in April and also the Magic Millions Adelaide sale in March.

Kaphero proved to be one of the smartest of the Danzero offspring, winning 10 races including nine on Melbourne tracks, and earning $801,045.

His five outings at two included three wins including the Blue Diamond Preview and Magic Millions Adelaide 2YO Classic by four lengths.

As an older performer, Kaphero strung together five successive wins in Melbourne, including the G3 MVRC McEwan Stakes.

He was also G1 placed in the Manikato Stakes at Moonee Valley.

Kaphero's toughness was not surprising. Paternally he is one 20 offspring to date by Danzero who each have won 10 or more races, the others including G1 sprinter-miler Niconero (13 wins) and Sydney jucenile triple crown winner Dance Hero (10).

Danero, out of a mare by Star Kingdom's son Kaoru Star, came from Danehill's first crop and has to date from his Australian use sired 507 winners (35 SWs) of 1540 races (85 stakes) and $55 million.

He has also had winners in the northern hemisphere from two visits to England early in his stud career,

Danzero was bred by Arrowfield Stud that introduced Danehill to Australia. Danzero stood at Arrowfield until transferred to Rosemont Stud in Victoria last year.

On the maternal sides Kaphero has a very strong pedigree. He is a brother to a stakes winner and two stakes placed runners, all from Kapchat, a winner of six races to 1500m, including the G1 STC Winfield Classic and G2 MVRC Laurent Perrier Stakes and runner up in the G1 Caulfield Thousand Guneas.

Kapchat was by outstanding NZ broodmare sire Centaine (Century) from the multiple stakes placed Kapelle Lady, a half-sister to noted matriarch Hunza.

Hunza's eight winners included Our Pompeii (Adelaide Cup twice, Sandown Cup, South Australian Derby) and champion juvenile filly Courtza (Golden Slipper and Blue Diamond).

Courtza's sons O'Reilly won two G1s and is one of New Zealand's leading sires.

Kaphero has seven lots in the Melbourne Premier catalogue.

Notable is the colt from Anna Dana, an American mare by the Mr. Prospector G1 winner Chester House from a Danzig half-sister to Street Cry, the Dubai World Cup winner who has sired Zenyatta (13 Group1 wins), Street Sense (Kentucky Derby), Whobegotyou (Caulfield Guineas) and Shocking (Melbourne Cup).
