Bright Outlook For Queensland

3 minute read

Queensland’s Wattle Brae Stud is excited about the future for its new freshman sire Mahisara following the shot in the arm the local thoroughbred industry has received from the State Government.

Wattle Brae’s Gary Turkington made the purchase of a quality new stallion a priority when he sensed that Queensland racing and breeding was in line for a multi-million dollar prizemoney injection.

“At the time of Mahisara’s purchase I was confident a resurgence was about to take place in Queensland and that I fully expected he would prove a flagship sire in a bright new era. I’ve even more reason to think so now,” Turkington said.

“The timing of Mahisara’s acquisition allowed us to purchase a nice package of mares at this year’s National Sale and they’ll provide him with a good start.

“There’s also the invaluable support he’s going to receive from his racing connections. Kia Ora Stud are still a stakeholder in Mahisara and are committed to giving him every opportunity.”

Mahisara was formerly trained at Scone by Arrowfield’s Paul Messara and he has also confirmed that he will be sending mares to the son of More Than Ready.

More Than Ready is building as a sire of sires, led by the likes of his Golden Slipper winner Sebring.

“Sebring’s Group One winners Criterion and Dissident were standouts in last season’s third-year-old division and look to have the attributes to emerge as leading weight-for-age performers,” Turkington said.

“Last Saturday's Memsie Stakes victory by Dissident is probably a taste of things to come.

“This is an incredibly pre-potent breed ideally suited by Australian racing conditions.

“Sebring has already sired 80-plus individual 2 or 3-year-old winners in the space of two seasons and at least three of More Than Ready’s domestically bred and raced sons have already sired local black type winners.

“They are facts broodmare owners should not ignore when looking at their best options for 2014.”
