More Than Just A Kinky Story

3 minute read

The Kinky Boom story has so many amazing angles it’s hard to know where to start.

But one thing is for sure – connections are in for one hell of a ride with the filly, now strongly favoured to win the $1.5 million Blue Diamond Stakes following her debut victory at Caulfield.

For her Queensland breeders Eureka Stud the win has its origins in the $600 broodmare purchase in Kinka Rhode from the 2014 Scone Thoroughbred Sale.

Kinka Rhose was sent to Eureka’s first season sire Spirit Of Boom with Kinky Boom the resulting filly.

Kinky Boom was Spirit Of Boom’s first runner in Victoria and netted him another stakes winner – his fourth from just 22 first crop runners which has included nine individual victors.

Kinky Boom was offered at the Melbourne Premier Sale by vendors Damian Gleeson and Deb Gifford of Phoenix Broodmare Farm where she was purchased by McEvoy Mitchell Racing for $40,000.

Tony McEvoy had reached his quote but was urged to inspect the filkly and decided to bid on her after he liked what he saw.

She now races for a big group of owners, many first-timers in racing, as well as Gleeson and Gifford.

They retained a 10% share of Kinky Boom, something they rarely do.

“We just knew she was special, we knew she had an X-Factor of some description,’’ Gleeson said.

Eureka Stud’s Scott McAlpine said he couldn’t remember too many victories that were as special to him.

“Spirit Of Boom is going so well, it really is hard to get your head around what he’s achieved,” McAlpine said.

“This filly Kinky Boom, she was always a very intelligent filly, a very athletic filly and while she was never huge as a young horse, she’s developed into an outstanding type.’’

Meanwhile Fairhill Farm principal Mike O’Donnell was lost for words when he realised Fiesta’s win in the G3 Widden Stakes at Rosehill had earned him a $100,000 bonus.

O’Donnell bred and offered Fiesta (I Am Invincible x Now Now) in the Gold Riband session at last year’s Classic Yearling Sale.

There was a $100,000 bonus on offer for all Gold Riband graduates split 50/50 between the vendor and supplier of the first horse from the session to win a 2YO stakes race.

Fiesta achieved that feat in brilliant fashion with a comprehensive victory for her connections.

“I obviously knew about the bonus that it existed but when I got the call it was a bloody nice surprise,’’ O’Donnell said.

“What perfect timing, a day before we take our draft to this year’s sale where we’ve got 10 horses and a very nice Hinchinbrook colt in the Gold Riband session.

Fiesta was a $150,000 buy for Star Thoroughbreds and Chris Waller Racing at the 2017 Classic Sale, where Denise Martin of Star Thoroughbreds first saw the filly.

“Agent Steve Brem help me select her and she was so popular that the filly was almost fully subscribed before we left Newmarket,’’ Martin said.
