High Chaparral mare Roses For Deb in foal to Merchant Navy and the Bernardini mare She Said No, in foal to No Nay Never, topped the broodmares on offer at Australian Broodmare Sale in Sydney on May 5.

The pair each made $220,000 with Roses For Deb, offered by Segenhoe Stud, purchased by Fernrigg Farm, a new entity building a bank of foundation mares.

Segenhoe’s Peter O’Brien targeted the auction rather than Friday night’s Chairman’s Sale with the mare.

“We could have gone to the Chairman’s Sale but we placed her here deliberately to try and stand her out a bit and it seems to have paid off,’’ O’Brien said.

She Said No went to Yuesheng Zhang of Yulong Investments, who ended the day as leading buyer by aggregate, purchasing four lots for $517,000 as future dates for young sire Grunt.

The first Southern Hemisphere-bred No Nay Never yearlings sold for up to $400,000 this year and he has over 10% stakes winners to runners despite his oldest only just turning three.

Day one ended with a gross of $5,470,500 and an average of $41,132.

Coolmore was the top vendor on aggregate with 14 lots sold for $657,000.
