A.P. Indy Colt Takes Charge In Florida Derby

3 minute read

Few horses own a more regal pedigree than Take Charge Indy, who lived up to it in style when he claimed the scalp of Union Rags in the G1 Florida Derby at the weekend.

The Kentucky Derby-bound colt became the 25th G1 winner by retired leading sire A P Indy.

Although A.P. Indy is yet to sire a Kentucky Derby winner, the son of Seattle Slew is recognised as one of the leading classic sources.

His son Bernardini won the Preakness Stakes while daughters Rags To Riches and Secret Status won the Belmont Stakes and Kentucky Oaks.

Take Charge Indy is the second Florida Derby winner sired by A P Indy following Friends Lake.

A P Indy, himself a Belmont Stakes and Breeders' Cup Classic winner, was retired from stud duty at Lane's End Farm in Kentucky last year.

He is the sire of 77 Group/Graded winners overall.

Bought back for $85,000 as a yearling, Take Charge Indy is the best of three winners out of Dehere's triple G1 heroine Take Charge Lady, the winner of 11 races and nearly $2.5 million earnings.

Take Charge Lady was sold at Keeneland in November 2004 for $4.2 million.
