Caravaggio And The Tin Man Light Up Royal Ascot

3 minute read

The impact the late American sire Scat Daddy has made on Royal Ascot 2017 will be remembered for years to come.

Despite having stood at Ashford Stud in Kentucky Scat Daddy has dominated this year’s Royal Meeting with two G1 winners headlining a series of stellar performances.

On Friday it was the turn of the exciting 3YO sprinter Caravaggio (Scat Daddy x Mekko Hokte, by Holy Bull) to shine when producing a spellbinding performance to land the third running of the G1 Commonwealth Cup over six furlongs for his Coolmore owners and trainer Aidan O’Brien.

“He is the fastest horse we have ever had,” said O’Brien. “He’s an absolutely brilliant horse.

O’Brien said a trip to Australia for the $10 million Everest at Randwick in October is definitely on the table for Caravaggio.

Caravaggio maintained his unbeaten six-from-six record in the Commonwealth Cup. His earlier victories include last season’s G1 Phoenix Stakes at the Curragh

Coolmore boss John Magnier, whose wife Sue is a joint owner of Caravaggio, said: “Every time we get a winner here, it always means something. We were unlucky to lose Scat Daddy a few years ago and this horse is his fourth winner at Royal Ascot this year.

“Hopefully, this fellow will take his place at stud.

“He is a better racehorse than Scat Daddy and it is a cross that we need. It’s just fortunate for us that he has come at the right time.”

Scat Daddy’s fabulous week also included a runaway victory for his superstar US-trained filly Lady Aurelia (Scat Daddy x D’Wildcat Speed, by Forest Wildcat) in Tuesday’s G1 King’s Stand Stakes and his 2YO colt Sioux Nation (Scat Daddy x Dream The Blues, by Oasis Dream) looked an outstanding prospect winning the G2 Norfolk Stakes on Wednesday.

Lady Aurelia’s trainer Wesley Ward struck again when 3YO filly Con Te Partiro (Scat Daddy x Temple Street, by Street Cry) won the Listed Sandringham Handicap.

Other noteworthy perfomances by Scat Daddy’s 2YO runners at Royal Ascot included Murillo (Scat Daddy x Mostaqeleh, by Rahy) finishing third in the G2 Coventry Stakes and Take Me With You (Scat Daddy x Me And Miss Jones, by Smarty Jones) filling the same position in the G3 Albany Stakes on Friday,

A winner of last year’s Coventry Stakes at the Royal Meeting, Caravaggio has now amassed £484,760 in total career prize money.

The colt is out of the multiple stakes-winning mare Mekko Hokte (Holy Bull) who is the dam of five winners from six foals including the G2 winner My Jen (Fusaichi Pegasus).

His third dam is the Listed winner Silver In Flight (Silver Series), who produced the dams of G2 winner Compari (Redattore) and G3 winner Sharp Performance (Kris S).

He is from the family of G1 winners Bien Bien (Manila), Spring At Last (Silver Deputy), Sharp Lisa (Dixieland Band) and G3 winner Dr Schwartzman (Fluorescent Light).

Mekko Hokte foaled a filly by the late Scat Daddy in 2016.

• DIAMOND JUBILEE STAKES: Equiano’s crack sprinter The Tin Man had to survive a stewards inquiry before he was declared the winer of the G1 feature on the final day at Royal Ascot.

The James Fanshawe-trained 5YO was able to clinch a narrow victory by a neck over Tasleet and Limato after the trio came together in the last furlong.

Fanshawe registered his tenth victory at the Royal Meeting and second success in The Diamond Jubilee Stakes having landed it 2011 with Society Rock.

"There is no place like Royal Ascot to train Group One winners,” Fanshawe said.

“He is the best older horse - I am not sure about the threeyear-olds - but he has done it twice now.

“He won the Champion Sprint last year and the Diamond Jubilee this year. He loves Ascot, it's the third time he has won here and it suits his style.”

Fanshawe said he could now head to Newmarket on July 15 for the G1 July Cup where he could clash with Friday’s Commonwealth Cup winner Caravaggio.

The Tin Man (Equiano x Persario by Bishop of Cashel) has now won seven of his 13 career starts for career prize money of £860,560. He is one of 11 stakes winners by Equiano but remains his only G1 winner.

The gelding is out the two-time winning mare Persario whose five foals to race have all been winners including the Fanshawe-trained Deacon Blues (Compton Place), who also landed the British Champions Sprint at Ascot when run a G2 race.

Persario is a three-quarters sister to the G3 winner and G1-placed Warningford (Warning), while his third dam produced the Listed winner Ansellman (Absalom).

Among the gelding’s relations are Princess D’Or (Dieu d'Or), who won the G2 Surround Stakes in Sydney and G1 winner Charming Mary (Morston).

Persario is also the dam of the Sepoy 2YO winner Hilario and had another filly by Sepoy in 2015. She produced a colt by Poet’s Voice in 2016.

The Tin Man is one of 11 stakes winners and the sole Group One winner for the Newsells Park Stud-based Equiano (Acclamation), who stood this season for a fee of £8,000
