First Group One Winner For Captain Sonador

3 minute read

The Danny Shum-trained 5YO gelding Seasons Bloom won the G1 Stewards’ Cup at Sha Tin to provide his late sire Captain Sonador with his first Group One winner.

Joao Moreira got the best from Seasons Blom (Captain Sonador x Pyramisa's Lass by Not A Single Doubt) to beat Fifty Fifty (Thorn Park) by half a length with Hong Kong’s Horse of the Year Werther (Tavistock) a neck further behind in third.

A former Victorian based galloper, Seasons Bloom sent his lifetime earnings to $HK19 million ($A3 million).

Seasons Bloom raced twice in Victoria under the name Le Capitaine for a fifth at Caulfield with Peter Moody and a win at Pakenham when trained by Brendan McCarthy.

Bred in Queensland by the Nolan family of Raheen Stud, Seasons Bloom’s sire Captain Sonador died in a freak paddock accident in 2014.

A Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale purchase, Captain Sonador won the G1 Epsom Handicap before retiring to Raheen Stud where he produced three crops with Seasons Bloom a member of his first.

Seasons Bloom was the first son or daughter of Captain Sonador sold at auction when he was offered by Raheen Stud.

From the unraced Not A Single Doubt mare Pyramisa's Lass, Seasons Bloom was sold for $26,000 to Ampulla Lodge at the 2013 Magic Millions National Weanling Sale on the Gold Coast.

Ampulla Lodge raced him in Victoria before he was sold to Hong Kong in a deal brokered by Paul Beamish.

The John Size-trained 5YO gelding D B Pin won the G1 Centenary Sprint Cup at Sha Tin yesterday to provide his sire Darci Brahma with his eighth Group One winner and 33rd stakes winner.

NZ-bred and sold D B Pin collared his stablemate Mr Stunning (Exceed And Excel) in the final 50 metres to win by a neck with Beat The Clock (Hinchinbrook) grabbing a dead-heat for second with Mr Stunning.

D B Pin is a close relative to the unbeaten Karaka Million winner Avantage (Fastnet Rock) being a half-brother to the 2YO’s dam Asavant (Zabeel).

D B Pin had finished second to Mr Stunning in last month’s G1 Hong Kong Sprint but turned the tables on Sunday.

A $200,000 purchase at the 2014 NZB Premier Sale at Karaka, D B Pin has now had 13 starts for five wins, seven placings and $HK10.9 million in prizemoney.

A half-sister to D B Pin by Fastnet Rock will go through the ring as Lot 479 in The Oaks Stud’s draft in Book 1 of the current NZB Karaka National Yearling Sale.
