UK Champions Day Lives Up To Its Name

3 minute read

Qatar Racing’s Roaring Lion will begin his stud career at Tweenhills Stud in 2019 and will undoubtedly be a candidate for shuttle duties in Australia.

The outstanding son of Kitten’s Joy from the G1-winning Street Sense mare Vionnet won last Saturday’s G1 Queen Elizabeth II Stakes on British Champions Day at Ascot and may wind up his career in the Breeders Cup Turf at Keeneland next month.

The John Gosden trained star has won four G1 races in succession, taking out the Eclipse Stakes, Juddmonte International and Irish Champions Stakes before last Saturday’s victory.

Fellow G1 winner Lightning Spear, a son of Pivotal also raced by Qatar Racing, will also start his stud career4 at Tweenhills next year.

2018 - Queen Elizabeth II Stakes - Roaring Lion

Kentucky-bred Roaring Lion was purchased by Qatar Racing’s bloodstock and racing manager David Redvers for only $US160,000 at the 2016 Keeneland September Yearling Sale. He has won eight of his 12 starts for earings of $US3,575,197 in earnings.

“I’m a big fan of his sire Kitten’s Joy and Roaring Lion was easily the best looking and best moving colt I’ve seen by him,”said Redvers.

Kitten’s Joy is a leading turf sire in the US, adding to the appeal of Roariing Lion for Australian breeders.

His dam Vionnet is from the two-time G3 winner Cambiocorsa (Avenue of Flags), a sister to G1 Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint winner California Flag (Avenue of Flags) and also the dam of G2 winners Moulin De Mougin (Curlin) and Schiaparelli (Ghostzapper) and Listed winners Alexis Tangier (Tiznow) and Bronson (Medaglia D’Oro).

* Frankel’s champion son Cracksman bought down the curtain on his career with a stunning victory in the G1 Champion Stakes at Ascot for the second successive year.

The four-year-old powered home to win by six lengths under Frankie Dettori from Crystal Ocean (Sea The Stars) and Czech challenger Subway Dancer (Shamardal), becoming only the second horse this century to win consecutive Champion Stakes after Twice Over in 2009 and 2010.

2018 - Qipco Champion Stakes - Cracksman

He was one of three winners on the day for trainer John Gosden, who also enjoyed Champions Day triumphs with Stradivarius and Roaring Lion.

Cracksman (Frankel x Rhadegunda by Pivotal) won eight of his 11 starts and amassed £2,803,331 prize-money.

He was bred from the Listed winner Rhadegunda (Pivotal) and is a half brother to G3 winner Fantastic Moon (Dalakhani) from the family of 1000 Guineas winner On The House (Be My Guest), G1 Coronation Stakes heroine Rebecca Sharp (Machiavellian) and the Epsom Derby, Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe and Eclipse Stakes hero Golden Horn (Cape Cross).

Champion stayer Stradivarius capped a super unbeaten season with a brave victory in the G2 British Champions Long Distance Cup at Ascot.

The Sea The Stars four-year-old also won the G2 Yorkshire Cup, G1 Ascot Gold Cup, G1 Goodwood Cup and G2 Lonsdale Cup.

Stradivarius (Sea The Stars x Private Life by Bering) has now won nine of his 14 starts for prize-money of £1,613,909.

He is one of seven foals out of the stakes-placed mare Private Life (Bering), also the dam of four other winners including the dual G3 winner Persian Storm (Monsun). His second dam Poughkeepsie (Sadler’s Wells) has produced nine winners including the stakes winning pair Pretty Tough (Desert King) and Parisienne (Distant Relative). This Melbourne Cup winner Protectionist (Monsun) is also in the family.

Galileo filly Magical showed her class to beat a crack field in the Champions Fillies & Mares Stakes at Ascot.

Aidan O'Brien recorded back-to-back victories in the feature when Magical beat the John Gosden-trained pair Coronet (Dubawi) and Lah Ti Dar (Dubawi), emulating last year’s win by another Hydrangea, another Galileo filly trained by O'Brien’.

Regally-bred filly Magical (Galileo x Halfway to Heaven by Pivotal) has now won four of her 11 starts and £600,707 in prizemoney.

She is from the Irish 1000 Guineas winner Halfway To Heaven and is a sister to multiple G1 winner Rhododendron (Galileo) and G3 winner Flying The Flag (Galileo).

Her second dam is the G2 winner Cassandra Go (Indian Ridge), also the dam of G3 winner Tickled Pink (Invincible Spirit).

Tickled Pink has produced the G1 winner Photo Call (Galileo) and G2 winner Land Force (No Nay Never).

Sands Of Mali gave his sire Panis a boost with his first G1 victory in the Champions Sprint for trainer Richard Fahey.
