Deaths Of Leading Industry Figures

3 minute read

Renowned US racing and breeding figure W. Cothran Campbell passed away on October 27 at his home in South Carolina at the age of 91.

Campbell founded Dogwood Stable and is widely considered the progenitor of present day racing partnerships with a reputation for turning modestly priced horses into winners.

Born in 1927 in New Orleans, Campbell began syndicating horses in 1969 shortly before launching the Dogwood partnership in Georgia.

Based in South Carolina since the mid-1980s, Dogwood Stable won more than 80 stakes races including classic winners Palace Malice (Curlin), winner of the 2013 Belmont Stakes, and 1990 Preakness Stakes hero Summer Squall (Storm Bird).

Dogwood also developed the outstanding juvenile filly of 1996 Storm Song and Inlander, 1987 American Steeplechase Horse of the Year and raced G1 winners Nassipour (Blushing Groom) and Southjet (Northjet) and noitable Graded performers Smok’n Frolic (Smoke Glacken), Limehouse (Grand Slam), Trippi (End Sweep) and Aikenite (Yes It’s True).

Campbell was honored as a ‘Pillar of the Turf’ during his induction to the US Racing Hall of Fame last August.

A member of The Jockey Club, Campbell was inducted into the South Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame and was awarded an Eclipse Award of Merit in 2012.

Following almost 50 years of forming Dogwood syndicates Campbell sold the operation’s stable client list in 2013 to Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners.

Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha, the 60-year-old owner of the Leicester City Football Club killed in a helicopter accident in the UK, had become a significant racehorse investor and was potentially set to rival some of the world’s biggest racing powerhouses.

He was confirmed as one of five people killed when his private helicopter crashed soon after taking off from outside Leicetser’s English soccer stadium.

Srivaddhanaprabha, who paid £39 million for the premiership-winning football club, was a influential player in the bloodstock market in Europe.

He was again among the big buyers at this month’s Book One of the October Yearling Sale and last year his purchases at the same included four offspring by Frankel including a filly for 2.5 million guineas.

His horses have won more than 70 races over the last 15 months racing under the banner of King Power Racing and trained by Andrew Balding, Ralph Beckett and Richard Hannon and at least another six trainers.
