3 minute read

A full-sister to Saturday’s Group 2 winner Coldplay will go through the ring at the 2017 NZB National Yearling Sale at Karaka.

The classy mare has given the Savabeel yearling’s pedigree a massive boost with two stakes wins since the catalogues went to print.

Already a G3 winner of the Eulogy Stakes last season, Coldplay has gone to another level in this campaign with three wins from three starts.

The Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman-trained mare won the G3 Eagle Technology Stakes (1600m) at Ellerslie two weeks ago before a terrific performance to win Saturday’s G2 Cal Isuzu Stakes (1600m) at Te Rapa.

“She’s a typical Savabeel who has come of age as a four-year-old,” said Forsman.

“What she did as a three-year-old last season was on raw ability alone. She’s much stronger and mature now.”

Coldplay (Savabeel x Forty Two Below by O’Reilly) has bred by Gary Wallace, who races the mare in partnership with Waikato Stud’s Garry Chittick. She has had 12 starts for five wins and more than $177,000 in stakes.

Waikato Stud will offer the full-sister, who goes through the ring as Lot 170 in the 2017 Premier Sale at Karaka. Forty Two Below’s two-year-old colt by Savabeel was sold for NZ$475,000 to the Hong Kong Jockey Club at this year’s NZB Premier Sale.

Forty Two Below has produced three winners and is a sister to Listed winner and G2-placed The Big Chill. Second dam Icy Calm (Western Symphony) won the Listed Maribyrnong Trial Stakes.

Coldplay completed an outstanding day at Te Rapa for the Baker-Forsman stable as they also won the Waikato Cup with Lizzie L’Amour and

the Wentwood Grange 2YO with Caesour’s Dream.

Well-related Zabeel mare Lizzie L’Amour has enhanced her value with her successful open class debut at Te Rapa.

The progressive four-year-old took a sharp rise in class in her stride when she was untroubled to triumph in the G3 Waikato Cup.

“We ran her out of her grade because she’s by Zabeel and we all wanted black type for her,” said Murray Baker, who trains the mare at Cambridge with Andrew Forsman.

Lizzie L’Amour was making just her eighth race day appearance and was stepping up from a fifth in Rating 75 company. She is the 162nd stakes winner by the Zabeel.

Out of the Sadler’s Wells mare Sabia, Lizzie L’Amour may now make her next appearance in the G3 City of Auckland Cup at Ellerslie on New Year’s Day.

That race is also likely to be on the programme of the runner-up Snow Secret (Sakhee’s Secret).

Thee Auld Floozie beat her Stephen Marsh-trained stablemate Seize The Moment and Hasselhoof in the Listed J. Swap Contractors 1400 at Te Rapa with the trio all set for Group features in the coming weeks.

“The Rich Hill Mile now looks a perfect race for Thee Auld Floozie,” Marsh said after the win.

Thee Auld Floozie (Mastercraftsman x Thee Auld Hussie by Spinning World) was making her first appearance since she finished fifth in last month’s G2 Coupland’s Bakeries Mile at Riccarton.

Already a G3 winner, Thee Auld Floozie is the best of four winners from stakes-winner Thee Auld Hussie.

Seize The Moment (Pins)showed he was on target for the Wellington Cup meeting in January.

“He doesn’t go right-handed, we’ll be looking at the Anniversary Handicap and the Thorndon Mile for him,” Marsh said.

Hasselhoof (Tavistock) showed he was closing in on winning form with his late finish for third.

“He was vulnerable at the trip and he’ll go to the Zabeel Classic next,” said Chris Gibbs, who trains in partnership with Donna Logan.

Coldplay maintained top form with her third consecutive victory. She was a shade slow out of barrier three but Craig Grylls soon rushed her forward to be a handy fourth (rails) in behind the pace. Around the bend Grylls saved ground and when the field swung in for the run home they were poised to challenge. The split presented itself at the 250m and Coldplay had bags of room to then run up to the lead and narrowly take over inside the 100m. Near the post she edged clear to win well. Rising Shot was fourth last (rails) at the last corner, went wide then switched back to the fence and made a very promising run all the way to the line for a meritorious second. Stolen Dance sat outside the lead to the turn, grabbed the lead at the 300m, still led at the hundred then battled well to the post for third. Girl Of My Dreams led around the last corner, was headed at the 300m but battled away to hold a fair fourth.
