Karaka Graduates Reign At Sha Tin

3 minute read

Karaka sales graduates have done it again in a major Hong Kong sprint by sweeping the first three placings in Sunday’s G1 Chairman’s Sprint Prize at Sha Tin.

The winner Beat The Clock (Hinchinbrook x Filon Fenena) was a $200,000 purchase at the 2015 NZB Ready to Run Sale from Prima Park while runner-up Rattan (Savabeel) cost $150,000 at the 2015 NBB Karaka Premier Sale.

Third-placed Little Giant (Swiss Ace) was passed in at the 2014 NZB Karaka Select Sale with a $55,000 reserve.

The clean sweep follows Karaka dominance of the last two editions of the showpiece G1 Hong Kong Sprint, sale products filling the quinella in 2017 and all of the first four positions last December.

Mr Stunning (Exceed And Excel) was the winner of both races.

Karaka recruits were also to the fore in the G1 Centenary Sprint Cup in January where Beat the Clock prevailed over Mr Stunning.

The G2 Sprint Cup at Sha Tin earlier this month saw Karaka graduates finished first, second, third and fourth with Rattan, Beat the Clock, Mr Stunning and Pingwu Spark (Mastercraftsman).

In Sunday’s feature Beat the Clock took them most of the home straight to overhaul the tenacious front-runner Rattan, edging past to win by a half a length. The time was a fast 1:08.26.

The John Size-trained Beat the Clock has now had 21 starts for eight wins, 13 placings and HK$34.9 million in prize-money for owner Merrick Chung Wai Lik, equivalent of more than 33 times his purchase price.

Second-placed Rattan, a seven-race winner, has now earned more than HK$15 million, which is almost 20 times his purchase price, while Little Giant has dwarfed his $55,000 reserve with earnings of HK$6.6 million (NZ$1.26 million).

Meanwhile New Zealand-bred megastar Beauty Generation (Road to Rock), who cost just $60,000 at the 2014 Select Sale at Karaka, is now the highest prize-money earner in the history of Hong Kong racing.

His victory in Sunday’s G1 Champions Mile at Sha Tin carried him past Viva Pataca (Marju) with earnings of HK$86.96 million.

That’s the equivalent of NZ$16.64 million, which is 277 times his purchase price.

It was the ninth consecutive win for the champion and completed a perfect eight-from-eight season. Overall, Beauty Generation is now the winner of 17 of his 30 starts.

On Sunday he was dominant again, leading and outclassing his opposition by a length and a half in 1:33.63 for the 1600 metres.

Owned by Patrick Kwok Ho Chuen, Beauty Generation is now a seven-time Group 1 winner, having previously won the Hong Kong Mile twice, last year’s Champions Mile, the Stewards’ Cup and two editions of the Queen’s Silver Jubilee Cup.

Beauty Generation (Road To Rock x Stylkish Bel) was bred by Nearco Stud.

The mating was planned by Adrian Clark and he was born at Highden Park where he was raised, educated and prepared for the Karaka yearling sale.
