Karaka Graduates Make A Killing

3 minute read

Graduates of New Zealand Bloodstock sales dominated the Group 2 Bill Stutt Stakes at Moonee Valley.

The Holy One (Tavistock), Vegas Knight (Declaration Of War) and Conqueror (Fastnet Rock) were the only three Karaka sale graduates in the field and they finished first, second and third.

Bred by Richard Davey, The Holy One was first bought for $NZ65,000 at Book 2 of Karaka 2018 by Fallstaff Bloodstock.

He then cost Busuttin Racing $NZ160,000 when re-offered though the Kilmore Farm draft at the NZB Ready to Run Sale later that year.

Vegas Knight was a $NZ180,000 purchase at Book 1 of Karaka 2018 while Conqueror was sold for $NZ1 million at the same sale.

The Holy One has now won three of his five starts, earning $A175,000 in stakes for a large group of owners.

Trainers Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young have an affinity for progeny by The Holy One's sire Tavistock, the G1 winning son of Zabeel standing at Cambridge Stud.

Busuttin and Young have previously enjoyed big-race success with progeny by Tavistock they secured at Karaka, having won the G1 Australian Derby in 2016 with the $NZ60,000 Premier Sale purchase Tavago.

The training duo also went close to winning the Stutt Stakes in 2016 with another Tavistock galloper Salsamor, who finished second.

"Tavistock, we love him obviously," said Busuttin. "They just keep winning so we will keep buying them.

"We bought The Holy One less than 12 months ago and now we'll have a runner in the Caulfield Guineas in two weeks. It's a good turn around.

"He was long and lanky but what we liked about him was he was athletic."

The Holy One (Tavistock x Entirely Saintly by Pentire) represents a cross that is fast becoming a sought after mix as the Tavistock/Pentire nick has resulted in three winners from five runners to date.

The Busuttin/Young team capped a big weekend when they won Sunday's G3 Thousand Guineas Prelude at Caulfield with the Waikato Stud-owned filly Acting.

Acting (Savabeel x Holytwood by Pins) is a homebred with a special heritage as her dam died as a result of laminitis soon after the filly was born.

Acting, who has raced just four times for three wins and earnings of $198,750, is the first stakes winner out of Hollywood, a Melbourne winner who was a daughter of Waikato Stud's G1-winning sprinter Glamour Puss (Tale Of The Cat).

The family features G1 winners Vision And Power (Carnegie) and Steps In Time (Danehill Dancer).

"Acting has gone through the whole system. She is a Waikato Stud paddock-to-post filly," said Waikato's Mark Chittick.

"She is a filly who was earmarked to be kept from day one after we lost her mother and we just took her through the process.

"We are keeping these sorts of fillies for a long-term view. We built our broodmare band and built the farm on these type of results."

Busuttin has a huge opinion of Acting, the 90th stakes winner by Savabeel.

"She's a fantastic filly. This is the best horse in our stable," Busuttin said.

She will have to prove it at her next start as the stable has to pay a $27,000 late entry fee to ensure she can run in the G1 Thousand Guineas on October 12 after her nomination was overlooked.

Tommy Berry rode Acting on Sunday but he is unable to ride her in the Thousand Guineas due to suspension.

Waikato Stud has enjoyed a terrific recent run of winners in Australia with seven this season including Acting's blood sister Magazine (Savabeel) for Ciaron Maher and David Eustace at Bendigo last Thursday.

The Busuttin and Young stable is also on a high with 10 wins in September including five in the last week.

High Chaparral's Group One winning mare Princess Jenni claimed her third stakes success in the G2 Stocks Stakes at Moonee Valley, leading home yet another trifecta for NZ breeding.

The David Brideoake-trained four-year-old recorded a classy come-from-behind win for the fifth win of her nine start career.

Her previous black type wins came last season in the G3 Alexandra Stakes (1600m) at Moonee Valley and the G1 Schweppes Oaks (2000m) at Morphettville.

Princess Jenni is from the final crop of High Chaparral and was purchased from the Phoenix Park draft at the 2017 New Zealand Bloodstock National Yearling Sale at Karaka for NZ$120,000.

Princess Jenni has now earned $A646,435 prizemoney for owners Tony, Lynn and Mick Ottobre, more than five times her purchase price.

She is the only foal to race from the Zabeel mare Glitzabeel, who won five times and is a grand-daughter of the G2 winner Precious Glitter (Danehill), a half-sister to the G3 winner and G1 placed Beauty Watch (Belong To Me).

Tony and Lynn Ottobre named Princess Jenni is named after their late daughter Jenni, who succumbed to brain cancer in 2015.

The three placegettters in the Stocks Stakes were all New Zealand bred and purchased at Karaka, with second and third Rondinella and Oceanex both daughters of in-form sire Ocean Park.

Progressive colt The Holy One advanced from winning an Echuca maiden (1400m) on July 25 to take out this Group 2 in good style, which took his record to three wins from five starts. He drove through from his inside barrier (1) to lead and then set a moderate tempo before lifting the pace from the 600m. He held a good break on turning for home and then lasted to win well. The well-supported Vegas Knight was near the rear early on before improving (wide) from the 1000m. He was caught deep from that point and did really well in fighting on for second after a wide trip. Conqueror settled in fifth place, was in held up between runners nearing the home turn, eased into clear running on straightening and then ran on well for third. Legionnaire was smartly away, settled outside the leader and eventual winner but was under pressure at the home turn before holding on to take fourth.
