Volksraad’s Mercedes Quinella

3 minute read

Volksraad Two Year-Old Clifton Prince (ex Trickery by Strausbrook) has extended his undefeated record to four with another strong win at Awapuni this afternoon.

After a narrow Listed win in the Wellesley Stakes (1000m) at Trentham last start, Clifton Prince took out today’s $150,000 Mercedes Super Bonus Prelude (1100m) in comfortable style.

With top Kiwi hoop Oppie Bosson the pilot, Clifton Prince set the early running with second elect Successor (Bahhare) placing the acid test to the favourite throughout.

However Successors early efforts were to no avail, with the son of Clifton Prince extending nicely after straightening to run away a two length winner from another Volksraad colt in Sir Slick who finished on well for second, with Successor hanging on for third.

Clifton Prince was an inexpensive $27,000 yearling purchase by trainer Peter McKay out of the New Zealand Bloodstock Select Colts ring.

Clifton Prince is a three quarter brother to champion South African racehorse Clifton King.

A $125,000 yearling from the 1997 New Zealand Bloodstock Select sale, Clifton King has won 12 times including wins in the Greyville South African Guineas Gr 1 and the Gosforth Park November H. Gr 1.

One of the most underrated sires in Australasia, Volksraad is the sire of the winners of over $15.1 m. and 26 stakeswinners including Clifton King, One Under, Dantelah, Vinaka, Star Satire, Zola, Torlesse, Bahnhof Zoo, Katana, Karaka One and Lord Volksraad.

Clifton Prince’s Matamata breeders Mapperley Stud will offer a full brother to the star New Zealand Two Year-Old at the New Zealand Bloodstock Select Sale at Karaka on Friday the 30th of January.
