Chinchilla Is Rosey In The Wet

Breeding buffs would have had no hesitation in backing Chinchilla Rose to win today's Group 2 QTC Cup (1300m) at Eagle Farm.

The daughter of Lion Hunter was a notable drifter in betting, from an opening quote of $3.60 to start $4.40, but she sustained a long run in the straight to overhaul proven wet tracker Black Ink near the line.

The effort had even more merit when you consider she was forced to race wide throughout.

Chinchilla Rose was passed in for $420,000 at the 2006 William Inglis Melbourne Premier Sale and has been a top class filly since she won on debut at Doomben last year.

Today was her third Group race win, following the G3 Sweet Embrace Stakes as a two-year-old and this year's G2 Surround Stakes at Randwick.

This was the filly's first start on a Heavy track, but she handled it perfectly.

Being by Lion Hunter from the Last Tycoon mare Chiara, she is a full-sister to the former handy sprinter Leone Chiara.

That mare won three of six races on wet tracks, including two easy wins on the Heavy from just three attempts.

Chiara is also the dam of G2 Ascot Vale stakes winner Ferocity – also by Lion Hunter - who now stands at Oaklands Stud in Queensland.

His first weanlings were sold last week at the Magic Millions National Weanling Sale.
