The colt was offered by Esker Lodge on behalf of Hawke's Bay merchant banker Sam Kelt and was purchased by retired Singapore businessman Jayven See for the equivalent of $A797,035.

See's p[revious highest priced purchase was $A380,000 for a colt by Exceed And Excel in AUstralia.

"I thought he was one of the best I have seen in the sale," See said of his million dollar baby.

He said the colt was likely to stay in New Zealand but is yet to select a trainer.

The colt is the second million dollar yearling from Popsy sold at the New Zealand Bloodstock Karaka sale.

Two years ago a three-quarter brother by Redoute's Choice to today's offering was sold for $1.45 million.

That colt now racesd in NZ as Maciano for the John Sargent stable and has won once from three starts.

Sydney trainer Gai Waterhouse was quick off the mark at the first session today when she paid $650,000 for a Pins half sister to Hips Don't Lie on behalf of Hong Kong owner Leung Kaifai.

Kaifai raced the Hong Kong champion Lucky Owners.

"We told him we thought she was one of the best fillies in the sale," Waterhouse said.

"Then we saw that Sir Patrick Hogan and Coolmore were also bidding on her, so we had some good people who shared our views."

Waterhouse said she at Karaka looking for top class classic staying prospects.

"I've come here to buy horses for Derbys, Oaks and Cups, and usually most horses that win those races past 2400m have the NZ suffix," she said.

Bart Cummings major client Dato Tan Chin Nam's agent Duncan Ramage paid $575,000 for a Zabeel filly from Markisa, a granddaughter of the great broodmare Eight Carat.
