Bargain Filly Produces Sparkling Results

3 minute read

Exciting Perth filly Spangled Impact is an early candidate for the juvenile bargain of the year after racing twice for two dashing wins on her home track AT Ascot including the $100,000 Crystal Slipper on November 28.

By the Lonhro sire Demerit, she cost her trainer and part-owner Mike Santich only $2000 at the Magic Millions Perth Winter Yearling Sale.

She was bred by Kent Johnston’s Taunton Vale Stud near Dardanup in the Ferguson Valley in south west WA and is from the second crop of their resident sire Demerit.

Sire in his first crop of another smart 2YO winner Puteri Jewel (WATC Westspeed 2YO Plate) Demerit was bred at Woodlands Stud in the Hunter Valley.

He raced on 13 occasions and his record include a win in the G3 Guineas Prelude at Caulfield and multiple Group placings in Sydney and Melbourne.

Demerit is from Shame, a top flight Scenic filly who won the G1 QTC Sires Stakes and G1 Thousand Guineas and was placed in the All-Aged Stakes, George Ryder Stakes, Toorak Handicap, Futurity Stakes, Flight Stakes, Doomben Cup and Coolmore Classic.

As Scenic is by Sadler’s Wells, Demerit carries a lot of the genes that helped forge Pierro, Lonhro’s world class colt who won 11 of his 14 starts including five G1 races.

Pierro, who covered 220 mares at Coolmore Stud in his debut season in 2014, is a grandson of a Sadler’s Wells mare.

Spangled Impact is from Spangles, an unraced daughter of the Danzig sire Perugino bought as an untested broodmare by Taunton Vale Stud for $7000 in Perth in 2009.

She is a half-sister to the Western Australian star Old Comrade, a winner of the G1 Australian Cup, G1 Railway Stakes and two runnings of the G1 Fruit ‘n’ Veg Stakes.
