A Grand Weekend For Godolphin

3 minute read

The scope and depth of Sheikh Mohammed’s global breeding and racing investments were clearly defined on the weekend by the outstanding Group One wins of Hauraki and Hartnell at Randwick and Flemington.

In perhaps the most satisfying weekend John O’Shea has enjoyed since he took charge of the Godolphin team in Australia, Hauraki and Hartnell put their stamp on what is shaping as a huge spring for the stable with their wins in the $1 milion Eposom Handicap at Randwick and $500,000 Turnbull Stakes at Flemington.

For good measure the stable also won the G3 Craven Plate and Listed Gimcrack Stakes at Randwick with It’s Somewhat (Dynaformer) and Jorda (Exceed And Excel).

Their wins left the Godolphin hierarchy in the envious position of having to decide which major spring targets the pair will now target with the Caulfield Cup and WS Cox Plate on the agenda.

O’Shea said he will consult with Godolphin’s John Ferguson and make a decision this week on whether Hartnell will contest the $3 million Caulfield Cup on October 15 or heads to the $3.5 million WS Cox Plate at Moonee Valley on October 22 with Hauraki.

HAURAKI (Reset x Youthful Presence by Dehere): The Australian-bred 5YO gelding is the fifth G1 winner by Reset and has now won five of his 20 career starts with nine placings for earnings of $2,006,660.

Previously placed five times at G1 level, he is one of 11 named foals out of Youthful Presence, a half-sister to the stakes winners Walking Or Dancing (Falvelon) and Irongail (Canny Lad).

Hauraki is a half-brother to five winners, including the G1 winner Kidnapped (Viscount), G2 winner Academus (Lonhro) and Listed winner Deledio (Testa Rossa).

His second dam Young Vic (Old Vic) is a half-sister to the stakes winner and G1 producing mare Nuryana (Nureyev), dam of the G1 Coronation Stakes winner and stakes producing mare Rebecca Sharp (Machiavellian).

This family includes Epsom Derby and Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe winner Golden Horn (Cape Cross).

Youthful Presence has a Sepoy two-year-old filly and was covered by Lonhro last spring after producing a colt by that sire.

Reset’s other G1 winners are Fawkner, Rebel Raider, Pinker Pinker and Set Square.

HARTNELL (Authorized x Debonnaire by Anabaa): The 6YO was bred by Rabbah Bloodstock and has now won 10 of his 26 starts with six placings for earnings of $2,233,999.

Hartnell is one of 27 stakes winners and four G1 winners by Authorized, the Derby winning son of Montjeu who previously shuttled to Australia and now stands in France at Haras du Logis.

Hartnell’s dam Debonnaire has also produced the Listed winner Roz (Teofilo).

She is a half-sister to stakes placed pair Dramatic Quest (Zafonic) and Proceed With Care (Danehill) from Ultra Finesse (Rahy), a G2 placed half-sister to Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe winner Suave Dancer (Green Dancer).

Debonnaire has a yearling colt and filly foal by Frankel.

Hartnell followed up last month’s brilliant wins in the Chelmsford Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) and Hill Stakes (Gr 2, 2000m) to record another outstanding victory in taking out this Group One race in effortless fashion. He began well, settled nicely in fifth place, one off the rails, comfortably moved up nearing the home turn, took the lead at the 300m and then dashed clear to score a very easy win, looking primed for a possible clash with Winx (Street Cry) in the Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) on 22 October. Jameka tracked the winner, racing in sixth place, moved up (under riding) at the home turn, got to second at the 200m and fought on well to hold that position, having no chance with the winner. The winner’s stablemate Tally raced outside the leader (Second Bullet), took the lead at the home turn and held on well for a very good third. Preferment raced in seventh place on the rails, went to fifth (under riding) nearing the 200m and then battled on well (7 lengths) fourth. Happy Trails was back in tenth place and made good ground in the straight for (7.8 lengths) fifth, putting up a nice effort at this second run this preparation. Tarzino was a handy fourth to the home turn and then battled on for (8.1 lengths) sixth.
