The scope and depth of Sheikh Mohammed’s global breeding and racing investments were clearly defined on the weekend by the outstanding Group One wins of Hauraki and Hartnell at Randwick and Flemington.
In perhaps the most satisfying weekend John O’Shea has enjoyed since he took charge of the Godolphin team in Australia, Hauraki and Hartnell put their stamp on what is shaping as a huge spring for the stable with their wins in the $1 milion Eposom Handicap at Randwick and $500,000 Turnbull Stakes at Flemington.
For good measure the stable also won the G3 Craven Plate and Listed Gimcrack Stakes at Randwick with It’s Somewhat (Dynaformer) and Jorda (Exceed And Excel).
Their wins left the Godolphin hierarchy in the envious position of having to decide which major spring targets the pair will now target with the Caulfield Cup and WS Cox Plate on the agenda.O’Shea said he will consult with Godolphin’s John Ferguson and make a decision this week on whether Hartnell will contest the $3 million Caulfield Cup on October 15 or heads to the $3.5 million WS Cox Plate at Moonee Valley on October 22 with Hauraki.
