New Group One Winner For Fastnet Rock

3 minute read

A fabulous 2016 in Europe for Fastnet Rock got better at Doncaster on Saturday when the William Haggas-trained colt Rivet won the Racing Post Trophy to become the 25th Group One winner by the champion Australian sire.

Rivet headlined another big weekend of results for Fastnet Rock in the UK and America with his northern hemisphere-bred progeny that took his tally of black type winners to 101.

Rivet (Fastnet Rock x Starship, by Galileo), winner of the G2 Champagne Stakes at Doncaster in September, led home a trifecta for Coolmore sires in Britain’s final G1 race of the year when he beat the favourite Yucatan (Galileo x Six Perfections, by Celtic Swing) and Salouen (Canford Cliffs x Gali Gal, by Galileo).

Once again the common thread was Coolmore’s champion sire Galileo but it was Fastnet Rock’s day thank to Rivet, a home-bred colt raced by a group that includes the legendary jockey Lester Piggott and Coolmore’s Sue Magnier and Michael Tabor.

Haggas is married to Piggott’s daughter Maureen who was thrilled to see a colt bred by her father win such an sire making race.

“My mother bought the grandam a long time ago from Anthony Oppenheimer. The dam is a half-sister to Superstar Leo so it’s a great family we know really well and one that keeps giving,” she said.

“Everything we’ve bred from the mare has been a good one. We’ve sold them all bar this one and a mare that we’ve got in foal.

“It’s great that we kept this one. All of them out of the mare have had very good minds and he is the same.”

Rivet is a half-brother is G3 winner Alexander Pope (Danehill Dancer), who later raced in Hong Kong as Packing Tycoon, from Starhip, a half-sister to the former Haggas-trained Superstar Leo (College Chapel).

Superstar Leo was Europe’s champion juvenile filly with wins in the G2 Flying Childers Stakes and G3 Norfolk Stakes and seconds in the G1 Phoenix Stakes and G1 Prix de l’Abbaye.

Her own progeny include dual G3 winner Enticing (Pivotal) and the stakes-winning Sentaril (Danehill Dancer).

Her Irish-bred half-sister New York (Danzero) produced the imported G1 Turnbull Stakes winner December Draw (Medecis).

Rivet’s third dam is the G2 winner Dancing Rocks (Green Dancer), dam of G1 Yorkshire Oaks placed Rockerlong (Deploy) and G3 winner Glatisant (Rainbow Quest), herself the dam of G1 2000 Guineas winner and sire Footstepsinthesand and G1 Phoenix Stakes winner Pedro the Great.

Among their half-siblings is the Listed winner Belle d’Or (Medaglia d’Oro) and Frappe (Inchinor), the latter being dam of G1 Irish 2000 Guineas and G1 National Stakes winner and sire Power, G1 E. P. Taylor Stakes and G2 Ribblesdale Stakes heroine Curvy (Galileo), and Thakafaat (Unfuwain, who also won the Ribblesdale Stakes.

Starship has a yearling colt by Declaration of War.

Fastnet Rock also had two classy maiden juvenile winners in 24 hours at Newbury and added a new US 2YO winner to his tally at Keeneland on Saturday.

At Newbury on Saturday the Ralph Beckett-trained 2YO filly Crimson Rock (Fastnet Rock-Maryinsky, by Sadler’s Wells) was an impressive debut winner for her Sheikh Mohammed Bin Khalifa Al Thani’s Al Shahania Stud.

The filly was a $1 million yearling purchase at Keeneland last year and is a daughter of Maryinsky, runner-up in the G1 Fillies' Mile.

Maryinsky is the dam of two previous winners with her first foal by Danehill being the champion four-time G1 winner Peeping Fawn and her second the G1 winner and successful sire Thewayyouare (Kingmambo).

Peeping Fawn won the Pretty Polly Stakes, Irish Oaks, Nassau Stakes and Yorkshire Oaks and at stud has produced two winners.

Maryinsky is a daughter of the Kentucky Oaks winner Blush With Pride and is a half-sister to one of the most significant mares in US history Better Than Honour.

Better Than Honour set a world record price for a broodmare when selling for $14 million at the 2008 Fasig-Tipton November Select Mixed Sale after she had produced the US champion filly Rags To Riches, winner of the Belmont Stakes, Kentucky Oaks, Santa Anita Oaks and Las Virgenes Stakes, and another Belmont Stakes winner Jazil.

On Friday at Newbury the Charlie Hills-trained colt Rosarno (Fastnet Rock x Jouet, by Reprimand) also won his maiden

Fastnet Rock’s Keeneland winner was the 2YO filly Tamit, a €200,000 product of the 2015 Arqana August Yearling Sale in France from the Sadler’s Wells mare Roman Empress, a G1 Yorkshire Oaks third.

Roman Empress is a half-sister to G1 winner Imperial Monarch (Galileo) and the Irish Melbourne Cup runner full to G1 performers The Great Gatsby and Magritte.

Tamit is raced by the same connections as champion mare Tepin.
