Arrowfield buys Hartnell's sister

3 minute read

Arrowfield Stud's Paul Messara has bought a half sister to Hartnell at the broodmare sale in England.

Studmaster Paul Messara outlaid 360,000 guineas (abt $A597,600) for Phyllis Maud on the first day of the broodmare sale on Monday.

The winner of last year's BMW, Hartnell won the Turnbull Stakes in the spring and ran second to champion Winx in the Cox Plate and third in the Melbourne Cup behind Almandin and Heartbreak City.

"It is a little while since we have bought here but she is an obvious one for us to buy," Messara said.

"She was a good mare herself, and she'll stay here to foal. We'll probably cover on southern hemisphere time."

Phyllis Maid was offered by Godolphin with a Shamardal cover. Her Frankel foal half-brother sold for 250,000 guineas at the Tattersalls December Foal Sale last week.

The Miniver Rose, a mare by High Chaparral in foal to Dubawi, topped proceedings at 550,000 guineas.

A total of 205 lots were sold for 11,521,000 guineas at an average of 56,200 guineas and a median of 40,000 guineas, figures that are on a par with the opening session of last year’s sale.

The Miniver Rose, offered as part of the Godolphin consignment, is a G2 winning half-sister to G2 winner Belle De Crecy from the Cape Cross mare Bloemfontain. She was purchased by Blandford Bloodstock.

The consignment from Godolphin realised 4,408,000 guineas for the 59 lots offered
