3 minute read

Stunning Redoute’s Choice colt Pariah announced himself as a thoroughbred heavyweight with a dominant debut victory in the G3 Canonbury Stakes at Rosehill on Saturday.

The royally-bred juvenile set a new race record, prompting co-trainer Peter Snowden to declare the three-quarter brother to multiple G1 winner Melito a contender for the G1 Blue Diamond Stakes at Caulfield next month.

Pariah’s dam Secluded, by Hussonet, is out of the Listed winner Cloister (Marauding), a half sister to Melito (Redoute’s Choice).

His third dam is the G3-winning mare Pampas Fire (Prince True), a half-sister to the multiple G1 winner and leading sire Zeditave (The Judge) and G3 winners Square Deal (The Judge), Alannon (Noalcoholic) and Zedagal (The Judge).

Pariah was a $700,000 buy for James Harron Bloodstock at the 2016 Easter Yearling Sale from the Arrowfield Stud draft. The Harron/Snowden team combined last year to win the Magic Millions/Golden Slipper double with the now retired Capitalist.

He is the first foal to race from Secluded, a dual metropolitan winner from the Listed winner Cloister (Marauding).

Arrowfield will offer Pariah’s full brother at this year’s Easter Yearling Sale in April and will be one of 51 horses on offer from Arrowfield Stud and among 36 lots in the sale by Redoute’s Choice. Pariah is the 138th stakes winner by Redoute’s Choice and his 34th 2YO stakes winner.

Pariah extends James Harron's outstanding record with purchases from Arrowfield that include G1 winners Sweet Idea and Wandjina, Group winner Odyssey Moon and Listed winner Detective.

He signed for five Arrowfield yearlings at the recent 2017 Magic Millions Sale, including the sale-topping $1.3 million Redoute's Choice-Ballet Blue colt.

Harron said Pariah is now a valuable stud prospect.

“He’s a great-natured colt who has really matured into a beautiful horse and absolutely, things look good for him moving forward,’’ Harron said.

“When we saw him last year he had a lot of quality about him, was very masculine and he had a lovely shape, a really nice medium-sized horse, not too big and definitely not too small.

“Add to that his terrific pedigree and we were confident we were on a winner. It’s a nice start.’’

ARROWFIELD celebrated a 3YO double after their homebred Snitzel filly Teaspoon kept her unbeaten record intact in the G3 Widden Stakes at Rosehill.

The Michael Freedman-trained filly was last seen winning on debut at Canterbury in November for former Singapore trainer Michael Freedman.

This was Freedman’s first stakes winner since returning to Australia after his stint in Singapore.

Teaspoon (Snitzel x Patronella, by Mister C) has now won $159,750.

Her dam is the unraced Mister C mare Patronella, who has produced 16 foals, 13 of them winners. They include the G3 winner and G1-placed mare Aliyana Tilde, G3 winner Smytzer’s Trish and Listed winer Stella Artois, dam of the the G2 winner Freestyle (Snippets) and stakes-placed Bawaardi (Redoute’s Choice).

Patronella was retired from breeding in 2015 with Teaspoon her final foal.

Her win took Snitzel back to the head of the leading two-year-old sires premiership by earnings with his juveniles having earned $1,790,315 this season.

Snitzel also heads the leading two-year-old sires table by winners with 16 and the table for stakes winners in Australia with Teaspoon his 12th balck type winner this season.

Teaspoon is the 48th stakes winner and 20th 2YO stakeswinner for Snitzel.

THE David Payne-trained Delago Thunder won a maiden over 1000m on debut at Kembla Grange on Saturday, providing his sire Delago Deluxe with his first winner.

Delago Thunder (Delago Deluxe x Alezan Thunder by Written Tycoon) is raced by Nordic Racing and Breeding and was a $150,000 purchase

by Blue Sky Bloodstock from the draft of Newhaven Park at last year’s Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

The Peter and Paul Snowden-trained colt Pariah put up an impressive performance in winning here on debut. He was ridden quietly and settled particularly well in fifth place, one off the rails, in the small field of six. He moved up nicely rounding the home turn, sprinted quickly to hit the front on passing the 200m and then held on to score seemingly with something in hand. The favourite Menari began well from his inside barrier (1) and was then eased to settle behind the leaders. He was travelling well nearing the home turn but was then shuffled back on straightening before being able to switch into clear running at the 200m. He then made considerable late ground for a most unlucky second. Godolphin’s colt Malahat raced in fourth place, one out and one back, challenged at the 300m and then battled on well for a good third.
