The rise of Black Heart Bart to the status of being among the very best thoroughbreds produced in Western Australia ensures his sire Blackfriars will be a star attraction at next week’s Magic Millions Perth Yearling Sale.

Black Heart Bart’s win in the G1 CF Orr Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on Februray 11 took his record to 38 starts for 15 wins, 12 seconds two thirds and over $3.1 million prizemoney.

He has won four G1 races – the Orr Stakes, Underwood Stakes, Memsie Stakes and The Goodwood, and has been placed in the G1 Newmarket Handicap, G1 Caulfield Stakes, G1 Makybe Diva Stakes, G1 Stradbroke Handicap and G1 All-Aged Stakes.

Black Heart Bart, bred by Durham Lodge Stud, was twice passed in at WA sales for $16,000 and $20,000.,

Now trained by Darren Weir, Black Heart Bart is from Sister Theresa, an At Talaq mare who won six races and was fourth in the Queensland Oaks.

She is the dam of two other winners from nine foals and is the grandam of WA Stakes winners Rebel King (Universal Ruler), Rebelson (Snippetson).

Sister Theresa is a half-sister to Savannah Success (Success Express) the NZ Bloodstock Filly of Year and dam of Cox Plate winner and champion sire Savabeel and G1 placed sire Arlington.

Here third dam Alma Mater, by Semipalatinsk, won the G3 Adrian Knox Stakes.

The record of Black Heart Bart makes this WA-bred son of Blackfriars, a Victoria Derby winner by Danehill, worthy of a niche on the honour board of top performers from who came the west to match the best on Australia’s eastern seaboard and beyond.

Miss Andretti - 19 wins and $2, 827,713. She won five Australia G1 races (VRC Newmarket, Age Classic, Lightning Stakes, Australia Stakes, Manikato Stakes) nand the Royal Ascot King’s Stand Stakes in the UK. Australian Horse of the Year.

Scenic Blast - 8 wins and $2,110,490. He won the G1 Newmarket, G1 Lightning Stakes and Royal Ascot King’s Stand Stakes. Australian Horse of the Year.

Northerly - 19 wins, $9,341,850 (Caulfield Cup, Australian Cup, WS Cox Plate twice, Underwood Stakes twice, Yalumba Stakes, Railway Stakes. Australian Horse of the Year.

Placid Ark - 15 wins from 21 starts including G1 Newmarket Handicap, G1 Lightning Stakes and G1 Oakleigh Plate.

Rogan Josh - 13 wins and $2,680,354 (Melbourne Cup, LKS Mackinnon Stakes)

Black Knight - 9 wins (Melbourne Cup, 2nd Caulfield Cup)

Old Comrade - 6 wins and $1,782,250 (Australian Cup, WATC Fruit & Veg twice, Railway Stakes)

Playing God - 8 wins and $1,669,200 (Kingston Town Classic twice, WA Guineas, third Australian Cup, Turnbull Stakes, Australian Guineas, CF Orr Stakes).

Playing God, another son of Blackfriars, is a brother to WA champion God Has Spoken (8 wins, $1,189,250, second and third Kingston Town Classic, runner up Perth Cup twice).

He has 16 first crop yearlings in the 368 strong catalogue for the Magic Millions Perth Yearling Sale next Monday and Tuesday but will be overshadowed by Blackfriars and his representation of 25 offspring.

The Blackfriars draft includes mare by sires including Distorted Humor, Lonhro, Octagonal, Galileo, Langfuhr, Red Ransom, Royal Academy, Testa Rossa, Canny Lad, O’Reilly and Belong To Me.

Two of the Blackfriars yearlings are closely related to Playing God and God Has Spoken.

They are a colt from Tudor Magic, a Magic Albert Sydney winner from a sister to the dam of Playing God and God Has Spoken, and a colt from their Scenic half-sister Idyllic Doll.

The progeny of Blackfriars and Playing God feature in a catalogue showcasing the high quality of modern Western Australian breeding.

Other established or emerging WA sires represented include Gingerbread Man, War Chant, Frost Giant, Dick Turpin, Demerit, Trade Fair, Oratorio, Patronize, Planet Five, Scandal Keeper and Universal Ruler.

Besides Playing God, WA sires with strong first crop representations are My Admiration, Galah and City Place.
