Duporth A Big Winner For Kooringal Stud

3 minute read

Kooringal Stud would be delighted but any number of other studs would be lamenting the win by Duporth four-year-old Hey Doc in the G3 Aurie’s Star Handicap at Flemington last Saturday.

Duporth, an accomplished G1-winning son of Red Ransom, was on the market last season after leading country trainer Brett Cavanough decided to close down his Jindera Park Stud near Albury and move his racing stable to Scone.

Few offers came for the stallion until Kooringal Stud near Wagga Wagga in southern NSW decided to add the stallion to its roster.

Duporth is the sire of three stakes winners with Hey Doc, last season’s G1 Australian Guineas winner, certain to be a fine advertisement for the stallion this season.

Also the sire of black type winners Dashing Fellow and Ruettiger, Duporth had three metropolitan winners on Saturday with Let’s Party Marty winning on debut Doomben and Another Sin, trained by Brett Cavanough, scoring at Rosehill.

Hey Doc is a good example of the quality progeny by Duporth, who will stand for an increased fee of $7700 in 2017.

Duporth commenced sire duties in 2010 at Kitchwin Hills Stud at Scone before he was acquired by Brett Cavanagh when he established Jindera Park as an extension of his training business at Albury.

When Cavanough, the leading trainer in the southern districts for over a decade, decided to move to Scone in April he had to find new homes for the four resident sires at Jindera Park.

Duporth’s first four crops of racing age have comprised 115 winners of 252 races from 182 runners for prizemoney of more than $12 million.

His progeny have won in Singapore, Hong Kong, New Zealand, South Africa and America.

Hey Doc is very much in the mould of Duporth, a G1 BTC Cup and G1 Golden Rose winner and fourth in the G1 Caulfield Guineas.

Hey Doc confirmed that he was up with the best of his generation when he captured the Australian Guineas to go with his earlier wins in the G2 Bill Stutt Stakes and G3 CS Hayes Stakes and his third in the G1 Caulfield Guineas.

Hey Doc (Duporth x Heyington Honey by General Nediym) has now won seven of his 15 career starts, including four at Group level and has amassed $1,100,900 prize money.

Purchased for $85,000 as a yearling, Hey Doc is from Heyington Honey, an Adelaide winner by General Nediym purchased as a broodmare in 2010 for only $3500. Heyington Honey was euthanized in February 2015 after producing only two foals.

Heyington Honey was one of six winners from Noble Glow, a winner in Melbourne and Adelaide who changed hands at a Melbourne sale in 2011 for $4000.

Noble Glow was produced by the imported Melbourne Cup winner Jeune from Rustic River (Champion Pilot), a sister to the multiple stakes winner Excel Pilot.

Hey Doc, a Group One-winning three-year-old last season, resumed with a narrow but impressive first up victory. With the field racing closer to the Grandstand side, he travelled well for Luke Currie with the leading group, who were going at a steady tempo (first 600m 36.85). He sprinted quickly nearing the 200m, held the lead at the 50m and then fought on gamely to win in a photo, dashing home in quick time (last 600m 33.03). The favourite Cannyescent settled in last place in the ten-horse field, racing close to the Grandstand side, travelling a bit keenly in stages due to the slow early tempo before taking a split and sprinting quickly coming to the 400m. He then came with a strong late burst to just miss in a photo for second, running his last 600m in a fast 32.48. Grande Rosso was just behind the leaders, racing in about fifth place before getting through to briefly take the lead at the 200m. He then battled on well for a close-up third. I Am A Star raced eighth place, not far from the leaders, took a split at the 200m and fought on well in the sprint home for (2.9 lengths) fourth in a sound first up effort.
