Doomben Stakeswinner Makes It 76 For Snitzel

3 minute read

The Kelso Wood and Patricia Gesler-trained Snitzkraft became the 76th stakes winner for champion sire Snitzel with a brave performance to win the Listed Falvelon Handicap at Doomben.

The three-year-old colt was resuming from a spell having not been seen since he won over 1200m at Ipswich in September.

Snitzel is leading the Australian sires championship by both winners and earnings with Snitzkraft a member of Arrowfield Stud’s celebrated Magic Millions "Class of 2016" that now includes five stakeswinners.

Snitzkraft joins champion 2YO colt Invader, Group winners Showtime and Dracarys and Listed winner Pretty Fast as the five stakeswinners from Arrowfield's 2016 Magic Millions draft.

Snitzkraft was passed in and is raced by a group of five owners led by his breeders Mick and Diane Power.

It was Snitzraft's fourth win from eight starts, took his earnings beyond $220,000 and snared him a wildcard entry into the $1 million Magic Millions Snippets on January 13.

Snitzel has sired 18 stakes winners in the first five months of this season. He has already broken through $14 million prizemoney on the Australian General Sires' premiership, leaving him only $2.2 million short of his record total for the entire 2016/17 season.

Snitzkraft is the second foal and second winner out of city winning mare Power O'Raylee (O'Reilly) who is also the dam of unraced 2YO colt Proven Power (Dundeel), a yearling filly by Sizzling and a filly foal by Dundeel.

The family includes NZ Horse of the Year Uncle Remus, Group winners Cossack Warrior and Cossack Prince and Hong Kong sprinter Happy Zero.

Exciting 4YO Care to Think booked his place in the field for the $1 million Magic Millions Cup at the Gold Coast with an extraordinary success at Doomben on Saturday.

A son of multiple Cox Plate hero So You Think, Care to Think overcame traffic and interference to score a thrilling win for the Matt Dunn stable.

A $16,000 Magic Millions National Yearling Sale product in 2015 when purchased by Queensland bloodstock agent Neil Jenkinson Care To Think is now the winner of five of his 10 starts and over $240,000.

The Dunn stable celebrated a double when Reset's daughter Don'tbabylon won the Listed Nudgee Stakes to clinch a wildcard berth into the $1 million Magic Millions Fillies & Mares on Saturday week.

Dunn says Care To Think is a superior horse to last year’s Magic Millions Cup runner-up Perfect Dare.

“He’s a very exciting horse. He got stopped two or three times and the ground he made up in a short amount of time was extraordinary,” Dunn said.

Care To Think is shaping as a great bargain as he is from the first crop of global superstar So You Think, who stood for $66,000 in his first season at stud.

Veteran gelding Someday scored the biggest win of his career when he won the $300,000 Magic Millions Bernborough Handicap at Doomben on Saturday for his emotional trainer Desleigh Forster.

A Magic Millions National Weanling Sale graduate, Someday was on the verge of retirement but Forster convinced his owners to persevere with the 9YO son of Falvelon.

Someday (Falvelon x Miss Ivy by Gold Brose) gave Forster her secons successive win in the Bernborough Handicap after she won last year’s race with her ill-fated star Cylinder Beach. He was put down after he went amiss in a race in June.

Someday has now won three times at Listed level among his nine wins in only 37 career starts for prize money earnings of $643,950.

He is the only foal out of the G2-placed mare Miss Ivy while his second dam Midori Splice (Last Tycoon) produced six winners from eight foals to race.

His third dam Malibu Magic (Prego) won the Magic Millions 2YO Classic in 1989 and is a half-sister to the stakes-placed Border Lord (Rory’s Jester).

Someday’s fourth dam Jeckale (Solitary Hail) is a sister to the dam of G1 winner Solar Circle (Star Way) and a half-sister to dual G2 winner Shaybisc (Biscay), the dam of G2 winner Sashed (Sir Tristram) and G3 winners Bradshaw (Last Tycoon) and Asarka (Crown Jester).

Speedy colt Snitzkraft scored a smart first up win and has now raced eight times for four wins. Having his first run since winning at Ipswich on 23 September, he began quickly from his good barrier (2) and soon went to the front. He then travelled strongly, dashed clear at the 200m and held on to win well and in smart time. The $61 chance Irish Constabulary settled in second last place in the 13-horse field, improved along the rails on straightening, continued along the inner to be second at the 100m and kept making ground to finish (short neck) second. The favourite Havasay settled back in sixth place on the rails, went deep (under riding) at the home turn and responded over the final stages, making late ground to take third.
