Epidemic Adds More Value To FIne Family

Classy filly Epidemic added more value to an outstanding family when she recorded her first stakes win in the Listed Helen Coughlan Stakes at the Sunshine Coast on Saturday.

Stepping up to graded company for the first time, Epidemic added to the record of her sire Lonhro and further enhanced the future as a stallion of her older brother Impending.

The win came a week after Impending recorded his second G1 win in the Kingsford Smith Cup. He is now set for a second win in the G1 Stradbroke Handicap at Doomben next Saturday.

Epidemic wins the Coughlan Stakes Picture: Racing and Sports

Like Impending, who retires to stud later this year, Epidemic is a daughter of the G1-winning mare Mnemosyne, one of the best fillies of her era and now an elite broodmare.

Mnemosyne, a dual Group One winner of the Thousand Guineas and Queen Of The Turf Stakes.

From her six foals to race, five have been winners and Epidemic is her third stakes winner.

Epidemic is the 76th stakes winner by Lonhro who boasts an outstanding record of better than 70 per cent winners to runners.

In a close finish, the progressive James Cummings-trained filly Epidemic recorded her first stakes success and her fifth win in ten starts in scoring here. She drifted back early on from her good barrier (3) and settled back in 12th place (between runners) in a packed field before getting through closer to the inner at the home turn. She went to third at the 200m and finished best for a narrow but good win. Pomelo showed good pace from her wide barrier (13) before working across to take the lead at the 800m. She grabbed a break on straightening and kept fighting back well for second, staging a game performance after her early efforts. Just Dreaming, favourite in an open betting race, settled in sixth place (between runners), got a split on turning for home and went to fourth at the 200m. She then kept making ground for a close up third.
